Wagoneer Gearshift Electronics & Transmission Failure

Having serious trouble with my 2022 Jeep Wagoneer (gas, 176892km). The gear shift is acting up badly, grinding noises when shifting, slipping gears, and sometimes won't engage at all. The gear selection display on the instrument panel is completely dead too. Already had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so pretty worried about getting it fixed right. Has anyone dealt with similar transmission issues, especially with the electronic display problems? Looking for recommendations on what to check first and trustworthy repair options. My guess is it might be the gear shift indicator system, but not sure if thats the whole story.

As a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner, I experienced nearly identical symptoms. The combination of gear shift problems and a non-functioning digital display on the instrument panel pointed to a failed control module, not just mechanical transmission issues. The root cause was a defective transmission control module that affected both the physical shift knob operation and electronic display readings. The repair required: Complete diagnostic scan, Control module replacement, System recalibration, Transmission fluid check and refill This is considered a serious repair since it impacts critical driving functions and safety systems. The faulty module can cause unexpected gear disengagement and incorrect gear position readings. The grinding noise you describe matches what I experienced, it was the transmission attempting to engage gears without proper electronic signals from the control unit. The dead instrument panel display is typically not a coincidence, but rather directly connected to the same control module failure. Worth noting that this requires specialized diagnostic equipment and programming tools. The repair should include a full system test to ensure proper communication between the new control module, shift knob, and instrument panel displays.

Thanks for sharing your Cherokee experience! Those transmission control module issues are a real headache. The grinding and shift problems on my Wagoneer ended up being exactly what you described. The automotive electronics specialist found the same faulty module affecting both the gear selector and instrument panel display. Do you remember roughly what you paid for the full repair? My warranty just expired so I am trying to budget accordingly. Also curious if your shift knob and transmission have worked perfectly since the fix or if you noticed any lingering quirks?

The transmission control module replacement completely resolved both the gear shift indicator problems and instrument panel display issues on my Cherokee. The automotive electronics specialist did a thorough job diagnosing and fixing the sensor problem. Total cost was 1000 Euro for parts and labor to replace the affected control unit. Since the repair, the electronic display and gear selector have worked flawlessly, no more grinding, slipping, or display malfunctions. The instrument panel now shows accurate gear positions and all transmission functions are back to normal. Getting specialized diagnostic work from a qualified shop was key to properly identifying and fixing the root cause. A proper repair should include full system testing and calibration to ensure all electronic components communicate correctly. This prevents any lingering issues with the gear indicator or transmission operation.

After getting great feedback here about similar transmission control module issues, I took my Wagoneer to an automotive electronics specialist. Just like others mentioned, they found a faulty module that was causing both the gear selector problems and the dead instrument panel display. The total repair came to 1200 Euro including parts, labor, and complete system recalibration. While not cheap, the shop was thorough and professional. They showed me exactly how the failed control unit was affecting the electronic display and transmission operation. Very relieved to report that after the repair, everything works perfectly again. The gear indicator lights up properly on the digital display, no more grinding when shifting, and the transmission engages smoothly. The diagnostic equipment they used really helped pinpoint the exact issue without any guesswork. For anyone else facing similar problems, definitely look for a shop with proper transmission diagnostic tools. The gear selector issues turned out to be much more electronics-related than mechanical, which explains why my previous mechanic struggled to diagnose it correctly.
