VW Up's Heavy Steering Points to Power System Failure

Having trouble with my 2022 VW Up (30150km, gasoline). When driving, the steering wheel shakes noticeably and feels really heavy to turn. The handling feels loose and unstable. My mechanic found an error code related to power steering, but their previous repair work left me skeptical about their competence. Has anyone experienced similar steering pump issues with this model? Looking for recommendations on reliable repair shops and potential repair costs. Also curious if this could be related to wheel alignment or if its definitely the power steering system.

Last month I dealt with similar symptoms on my 2019 VW Polo TSI. The electric steering system showed similar warning signs, heavy steering feel and vibrations through the steering wheel. The root cause turned out to be a faulty connection in the steering column wiring harness. The steering system would intermittently lose power assistance, causing the heavy feel and instability. These symptoms are serious safety concerns that need immediate attention. The repair involved testing the electrical connections, replacing a damaged wiring connector in the steering column, and performing a wheel alignment to ensure the steering system was properly calibrated. The wheel alignment was necessary since the erratic steering behavior had affected the tire wear pattern. Based on your description, your Up likely has a similar electric steering setup. The shaking and heavy steering strongly suggest either a wiring issue or a failing power steering control module. Given the relatively low mileage, wiring problems are more probable than component failure. Recommend finding a shop that specializes in VW electrical systems, as generic repair shops often lack the diagnostic equipment needed for modern electric steering systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had almost identical symptoms with my Up last summer, really unstable steering and the wheel kept shaking, especially at higher speeds. The steering column wiring turned out to be the culprit, just like in your case. Have you had any recurring issues since getting it fixed? My steering system has been working perfectly after the repair, but would be curious to hear about your longer-term experience. Also, could you share what you paid for the complete fix? Would help give a rough idea what to expect cost-wise.

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. After getting the electric steering system fixed, everything has worked flawlessly for over 6 months now. No more heavy steering or instability issues. The repair was straightforward, just 95€ to fix a loose connection in the power steering wiring harness. The mechanic found a damaged plug that was causing intermittent power loss to the steering rack. Once they secured the connection properly, the steering response went back to normal. No alignment was needed in my case since they caught the issue before it could affect the tire wear. This kind of electrical fault in the steering system is apparently quite common in newer VWs. Having a proper diagnosis from a qualified technician who understands these modern electric steering setups makes all the difference in getting it fixed right the first time.

Glad to share my experience getting this fixed. The local VW specialist I visited immediately recognized the steering system symptoms. Their diagnostic equipment pinpointed the faulty wiring connection in under an hour. The total repair came to 180€ including a new wiring harness and labor. They also topped up the hydraulic fluid and checked the pressure hose connections while the system was open. The steering wheel response improved dramatically right after the fix. The mechanic was thorough and showed me the damaged wiring that was causing the power steering to cut out. They also performed a quick wheel alignment check to ensure the steering pump issues hadn't caused any suspension problems. Been driving for 3 months since the repair with zero steering problems. The wheel feels properly weighted now and tracks straight without any shakiness. Really happy I went with a shop that specializes in VW electrical systems rather than risking another bad repair job.
