Thanks for sharing your Golf GTI experience with similar sensor problems. Good to know it was the transmission control unit causing issues with both the gear indicator and electronic display. Did you keep track of the total repair cost? Just wondering what to budget since my Transporter needs similar work. Also curious if you had any other electrical gremlins pop up since getting it fixed? My mechanic seems hesitant about tackling these automotive electronics, so I might follow your advice and find a transmission specialist with proper diagnostic equipment.

After getting my GTI fixed at a transmission specialist, the gear shift indicator and electronic display issues were completely resolved. The failed control unit was the root cause, just as they suspected. Total cost came to 1000€ for replacing the affected control unit, including diagnostic work and reprogramming. The instrument panel has worked flawlessly since the repair, no ghost readings on the gear indicator or dark spots on the display. The shift knob moves smoothly between gears now, and the harsh transmission behavior disappeared completely. Going to a specialized shop was definitely worth it. They had the right diagnostic tools to properly identify and fix the control unit problem. No electrical issues have surfaced in the 20000km since the repair. The transmission shifts perfectly and all dashboard displays function as they should. Making the investment in proper diagnosis and repair prevented more expensive transmission damage down the road. Would strongly recommend finding a qualified transmission specialist who knows how to handle these electronic control systems.

Finally got my Transporter fixed last week. Found a transmission specialist who actually knew what they were doing with automotive electronics. The diagnostic scan confirmed it was indeed the control unit causing problems with the gear selector and dashboard display. Total repair came to 1200€, bit more than your GTI but included full transmission service too. The shift knob moves perfectly now and all the grinding noises are gone. Car dashboard is fully functional again with clear gear indicator readings. Really glad I switched to a proper transmission shop. They had specialized equipment to properly diagnose and fix the sensor problem. The car drives like new, huge difference from before. No more fighting with unresponsive gears or trying to guess which gear Im in with a dead display. Thanks again for pushing me toward a specialist. Saved me from potentially destroying the transmission by continuing to drive it with a faulty control unit.

Had similar symptoms with a 2005 VW Golf GTI. The digital display went dark and gear indicator system started malfunctioning, followed by harsh transmission shifts. Root cause was a failed transmission control unit that affected multiple car dashboard systems. The control unit manages both the gear selection and electronic display functions. When it degrades, it creates erratic behavior in the transmission and causes display failures. The repair required: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal and replacement of transmission control unit, Full system recalibration, Transmission fluid change, Reprogramming of new control module This was a serious repair requiring specialized VW diagnostic equipment. A general shop likely wont have the right tools or expertise. The failed unit can damage the transmission if left unfixed. Best to take it to a transmission specialist or dealership with proper diagnostic capabilities. The symptoms match classic control unit failure, they need proper equipment to verify and repair it correctly. My car had 98000km when the issue occurred. Getting it fixed early prevented additional transmission damage.
