VW Transporter Electrical Nightmare: Nav System Dead

Looking for advice on my VW Transporter (2004, gasoline) showing multiple electrical issues. The navigation system is completely dead and the ECU problems keep triggering error codes. Already checked the battery and basic fuses but no improvement. Suspect a software malfunction might be the root cause. Has anyone dealt with similar electrical gremlins in their Transporter? Mainly interested in hearing what diagnostics your shop ran and how they resolved it. Was it a recalibration issue or something more serious? Any input on repair costs would be great too.

As someone with moderate experience working on VWs, I faced nearly identical issues with my 2006 VW Caravelle. The onboard diagnostics kept showing multiple fault codes, and the entertainment system would out of nowhere shut down. After trying basic troubleshooting like checking connections and fuses, I took it to a workshop specializing in vehicle software diagnostics. They found the control module had corrupted software causing communication issues between different systems. The ECU problems were triggering cascading errors across multiple components. The fix involved reprogramming the control module and updating the software. Total cost was 240€, which included diagnostic time and the actual programming. Since then, all systems have been working properly with no error codes. Before suggesting specific solutions for your case, could you share: Have you noticed any specific pattern when these issues occur? What error codes are you getting exactly? Are there any other electrical components acting up? Has the vehicle had any recent repairs or battery replacements? A software bug in the control module often causes these symptoms in these VW models, but knowing these details would help narrow down if your issue is similar to what I experienced.

Had my last service done at 55061km where they also found similar issues. The mechanic ran full diagnostics and also noticed several control module errors. Seems like a widespread issue. Regarding your questions: The issues occur out of nowhere but mostly after the car sits for a few hours. Getting error codes P0602 and P0606 consistently. Radio and windows also act up occasionally. They quoted me 350€ for a complete software reset and ECU reprogramming. Wondering if thats reasonable or if I should look for another shop. Their diagnostic report suggests corrupted software is causing most problems, similar to your case. Did your software update fix all electrical issues permanently or did some problems return later?

Really glad you asked about the long-term results. Since having the software reset and control module reprogramming done on my VW, the electrical issues have stayed completely resolved for over 8 months now. The 350€ quote you received is actually quite reasonable considering the comprehensive work involved, my 240€ bill was just for basic recalibration, while yours includes a complete software reset. The error codes P0602 and P0606 you mentioned are exactly what my onboard diagnostics were showing. These typically indicate control unit programming errors, which matches the diagnosis you received about corrupted software. One thing I learned from my experience, make sure they perform a full backup of your vehicle settings before doing the reset. My shop skipped this step and I had to manually reprogram things like window settings afterward. Also worth asking if they'll include any software updates as part of the service, as there were some revised versions released to prevent these issues from recurring. The fact that your issues appear after the car sits is very characteristic of control module problems in these models. The unusual nature of the electrical gremlins, especially with the radio and windows, strongly suggests it's the same root cause I dealt with rather than individual component failures.

Thanks for sharing your experience with similar ECU problems. Those error codes match what I'm seeing too, especially that P0606. Just booked the software reset and recalibration for next week at the original shop, decided their 350€ quote was fair after checking around. Your tip about backing up settings before the control unit reprogramming is really helpful. Will definitely ask them about that and check if they include the latest software updates too. Don't want to manually reset everything like you had to. Really hoping this fixes all the electrical gremlins permanently like it did in your case. The unusual issues with the radio and windows are driving me crazy, especially on cold mornings. Will update once the work is done in case anyone else runs into similar control module problems with their Transporter. If anyone has extra suggestions about preventive maintenance after the software update, would appreciate hearing them. Thanks again for the detailed feedback, helped confirm I'm on the right track with this repair approach.
