VW Touran Engine Misfire: Coils & O2 Sensor Alert

Having trouble with my 2010 VW Touran 1.4 TSI. The engine has developed a rough idle and jerks noticeably during acceleration. The check engine light is on and diagnostic shows error codes. Already checked the air filter and it seems clean. The problem gets worse when the engine is warm. Suspect it might be related to ignition coils or oxygen sensor issues, but not entirely sure. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and got them fixed? Particularly interested in what parts needed replacement and how the repair went. Want to have some idea before taking it to the shop.

As someone with some car repair experience, I faced a similar issue with my 2012 VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, rough idle, jerking during acceleration, and check engine light. In my case, the workshop found a leak in the exhaust system that was causing incorrect readings from the oxygen sensor. This made the engine run rich at times, leading to the unstable performance. The total repair came to 265€, which included replacing a section of the exhaust and the faulty oxygen sensor. The repair solved all issues completely, no more jerking, smooth idle, and the engine light stayed off. Before suggesting specific solutions, it would help to know: How many kilometers/miles are on your engine? Have you noticed any unusual exhaust sounds or smells? Does the fuel consumption seem higher than normal? Are there any other warning lights besides the check engine light? Your issue could also be related to the fuel injectors or crankshaft sensor, but the symptoms strongly point toward an exhaust/oxygen sensor problem. Best to have a professional diagnose it properly to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My car has 56692km and was last serviced 6 months ago. Regarding the symptoms, there is a noticeable engine misfire when accelerating, particularly between 2000-3000 RPM. No unusual exhaust sounds, but fuel consumption has increased by about 15% in the last month. The check engine light is the only warning showing. After reading your post, I checked under the car but found no obvious exhaust leaks. Since the ignition coils are a common failure point in these engines, I am leaning towards getting them tested first. The timing of the misfire symptoms seems to match what others have reported with failing coils. Would be interested to know if anyone else has replaced ignition coils on these 1.4 TSI engines and what the cost was.

After replacing the oxygen sensor on my Tiguan, I actually encountered a similar misfire issue about 8 months later. It turned out to be faulty ignition coils, which is indeed a common problem on the 1.4 TSI engines, especially around the 50-60k kilometer mark. The engine misfire symptoms were nearly identical, rough idle and jerking between 2000-3000 RPM. The spark plugs were also showing signs of wear when inspected. I ended up replacing all four ignition coils and spark plugs as preventive maintenance, since labor costs are similar whether replacing one or all. Total cost breakdown: 4 ignition coils: 180€, 4 spark plugs: 60€, Labor: 120€ The repair completely resolved the misfiring and restored normal fuel consumption. When replacing ignition coils, its best to use OEM parts as aftermarket alternatives often dont last as long. The fuel pump and other components were tested but were functioning normally. Given your mileage and symptoms, focusing on the ignition system seems like the right approach. The increased fuel consumption is typical with misfires since the engine runs less efficiently.

Thanks for that detailed information. The symptoms and mileage you described match my situation perfectly, and the complete coil replacement makes sense rather than trying to identify which one is failing. I went ahead and booked an appointment with my mechanic for next week. Mentioned the engine misfire symptoms and requested they check the ignition coils and spark plugs specifically. The total estimate they gave me was around 350€, which matches what you paid. One final question for future maintenance, did you notice any early warning signs before the coils completely failed? Would help to know what to watch for next time, since these seem to be a recurring issue with the 1.4 TSI engines. The rough idle started gradually in my case, but the jerking during acceleration came on quite suddenly.
