VW Touran Brake Light Switch Fault Causing Error Alerts

After my recent garage visit, I have lost confidence in my mechanic. My car is showing a persistent brake light error in both the error memory and infotainment system. I suspect a faulty brake light switch might be causing these issues. Has anyone dealt with similar brake system problems? What were your experiences with the repair process and costs? For reference, I drive a 2022 VW Touran gasoline model with 107418km on the clock. Looking for advice on whether this is a common issue and recommendations for the brake switch replacement.

Had the same brake light issue with my 2019 VW Tiguan. The brake pedal switch was indeed causing intermittent brake light errors in the system. Initially thought it was just a minor electrical glitch, but it turned out the switch had completely failed. The brake switch replacement was necessary since the faulty switch was sending incorrect signals to both the brake lights and the car computer system. This is actually a known issue in several VW models. The repair process involved removing the lower dash panel to access the brake pedal assembly where the switch is mounted. The most concerning part was that a faulty brake light switch can affect multiple systems, including cruise control and start-stop functionality. While not immediately dangerous, it should be addressed promptly as it relates to critical brake system components. The fix was straightforward, the mechanic performed a complete brake switch replacement and recalibration of the system. After the repair, all error messages cleared and the brake lights functioned normally again. The entire process took about an hour at the garage. Would recommend getting a second opinion from another certified mechanic if you are unsure about your current one. This is a relatively common issue that any qualified technician should be able to diagnose and fix properly.

Thanks for your detailed response about the brake light switch issue. I eventually got mine fixed too and the vehicle safety systems are all working perfectly now. The automotive switch replacement did resolve all the electrical issues, including those annoying error messages. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also, has everything been working fine since the fix, or have you noticed any other related problems? In my case, I want to compare costs since I am considering switching to a different garage for future maintenance.

Just wanted to update on the costs, actually turned out to be a user error in my case, so there was no charge for the fix. The mechanic found the brake light switch was working perfectly fine, but needed a simple adjustment in its positioning. No automotive switch replacement was needed. Since that free adjustment, all vehicle safety systems have worked flawlessly. The electrical issue completely disappeared, and I have not seen any error messages in over 8 months of driving my Tiguan. The tail light system and brake lights are functioning exactly as they should. This experience actually increased my confidence in my mechanic since they were honest enough not to charge for such a simple fix, rather than replacing parts unnecessarily. They also took the time to explain what caused the problem and how to prevent it in the future.

The final update on my brake light situation really surprised me. The new mechanic I visited charged 180€ for the brake switch replacement, including labor. While checking the brake system, they also found the original switch had been improperly installed, which explained all those error messages. The repair process was quick, took about 45 minutes. The automotive switch replacement solved both the tail light errors and the warning messages in the dashboard display. Cars with modern safety systems are sensitive to even minor electrical issues, so having a properly installed switch made a huge difference. Been driving for 3 weeks since the fix with zero problems. All safety features work perfectly now. Definitely glad I switched mechanics, the new garage provided clear explanations and actually showed me the worn parts, which built more trust in their work. Based on this experience, I will continue with this new garage for future maintenance. They proved more thorough and transparent than my previous mechanic.
