VW Touareg Adaptive Headlight Control System Failure

Looking for advice regarding my 2018 VW Touareg (75000km, gasoline). The adaptive headlights seem to have a malfunction, warning light keeps showing up in the dash and the beam adjustment is completely off. Sometimes the low beams point way too high, other times too low. Had a bad experience with my regular mechanic last time, so I want to know if anyone else faced similar headlight range control issues and where they got it fixed properly. The error is stored in the system but I need a second opinion before going back to a shop.

Had the same headlight malfunction on my 2015 VW Tiguan. The symptoms matched exactly, erratic beam adjustment and persistent warning lights. The adaptive headlights system showed similar behavior with inconsistent beam levels. The root cause was a defective servomotor in the headlight assembly. When the range control module fails to properly adjust the beam height, it typically indicates either a faulty motor or corrupted calibration in the control module. The repair required: Complete diagnostic scan of the headlight control system, Replacement of the servomotor unit, Recalibration of the adaptive headlight system, Testing of the beam adjustment at different angles This was not a minor issue, as the faulty range control impacts nighttime visibility and can blind oncoming traffic. The repair should be done by a shop with proper diagnostic equipment and experience with VW adaptive lighting systems. In my case, it took a full day at the shop since they needed to properly calibrate the new servomotor and verify the beam adjustment was working correctly across all conditions.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Very helpful to hear about the servomotor being the culprit. My Touareg is now at the shop and they mentioned similar issues with the auto-leveling system and electrical connectors. Could you share what you paid for the full repair? Also wondering if youve had any other lighting system problems since getting it fixed. The headlight switch on mine feels a bit sticky too, so might need to address that while its being worked on.

Just got the repair bill recently, 1040€ total for fixing the range control fault on my Tiguan. The defective servomotor replacement was the main cost, but it was worth every cent. The light intensity and beam adjustment are now working perfectly. Since the repair, the adaptive headlights have been functioning exactly as they should. The auto-leveling system maintains proper beam height in all driving conditions. No warning lights or errors have appeared in over 6 months. Regarding the sticky headlight switch, would definitely recommend getting that checked while the car is already at the shop. These switches can occasionally collect debris and affect the overall headlight system performance. Better to address all lighting-related issues in one go rather than making multiple shop visits.

I finally got my Touareg back from the shop today. Total cost came to 1250€, more than expected but they did a thorough job. The control module and servomotor both needed replacement. They also cleaned and lubricated the headlight switch while the car was there. The auto-leveling system is now working perfectly. The adaptive headlights adjust smoothly and maintain proper beam height. Was worth finding a specialized shop rather than going back to my regular mechanic. Their diagnostic equipment picked up issues the previous shop missed. Had a night drive yesterday to test everything, huge difference in visibility. No more warning lights on the dash and the light intensity stays consistent. Feels good having this sorted properly rather than continuing to drive with faulty headlights. Only wish I had addressed this sooner before the control module failed completely. But at least now I know what to watch for if similar headlight malfunctions occur in the future.
