VW Tiguan Steering Column Controls Fail to Respond

My 2012 VW Tiguan diesel has suddenly stopped allowing electric adjustment of the steering column. The error memory shows a fault code related to the steering system. The mechanical movement still feels normal, but the electric adjustment feature is completely unresponsive. Has anyone encountered a similar adjustment issue with their Tiguan? Looking for insights on potential causes and repair solutions, particularly from those who have already dealt with this car steering problem. Would be helpful to know what parts needed replacement and the complexity of the repair.

I had a similar steering issue with my 2014 VW Touareg diesel. Based on my experience with electric adjustment problems, this sounds like a common mechanical fault that I encountered last year. In my case, the steering column adjustment stopped working due to a faulty connection in the wiring harness. The workshop diagnosed it as a damaged plug connection near the steering column module. They found worn cables that were causing intermittent electrical contact. The repair involved: Diagnostic scan to confirm the fault codes, Removal of steering column covers, Replacement of the wiring harness connector, System reset and testing Total repair cost was 95€, which included parts and labor. The fix took about 1.5 hours and has worked perfectly since then. To provide more specific guidance for your case, could you share: Current mileage on your Tiguan, Exact fault code from the error memory, Whether the issue occurred suddenly or developed gradually, If you notice any other electrical issues in the steering controls Since these steering column systems are similar across the VW lineup from those years, the root cause might be the same, but its best to confirm the specific details of your vehicle first.

Thanks for checking. Just had a service done last week at 12070km. The electronic steering adjustment stopped working immediately after leaving the shop, noticed it on my way home. The fault started showing right after. Based on your experience, sounds like they might have disturbed the wiring during service. I will check the service records and see what work they did around the steering column area. If any electrical work was done, that could explain the sudden adjustment issue. Will contact them to see if they can check the connections they worked on during the recent service.

Thanks for the additional details about the timing. That definitely changes my view of the steering failure, since my situation was different from yours. In my case, the electric steering issue developed over time, not immediately after service. Given that your steering column adjustment stopped working right after the service, I agree its highly likely they disturbed something during the work. When my Touareg was repaired, the technician mentioned how sensitive the wiring connections are around the steering column area, even slight disturbance during routine maintenance can cause problems. From my experience with the mechanical fault in my vehicle, I would: 1. Contact the shop immediately while the service is still fresh in their records 2. Request they check all electrical connections they accessed 3. Ask them to verify if any steering column components were moved during service 4. Get them to perform a full system diagnostic scan Since they just did the work, they should handle any steering issue caused during service at no additional cost. My repair was expensive only because it was unrelated to previous service work. Keep us posted on what they find. Would be helpful to know if its the same wiring problem I experienced or something different.

Thanks for all that information and sharing your Touareg experience. This points pretty clearly to a service-related electronic steering issue. My Tiguan shows fault code P1234, which I should have mentioned earlier. Just called the service center and they agreed to check it tomorrow morning. They confirmed they did remove some trim pieces around the steering column during the routine service to access other components. Their head technician thinks its likely a loose connection from the recent work. Will update once they diagnose the electric adjustment problem. Hopefully its just a matter of properly reconnecting what they disturbed during service, rather than needing new parts like in your case with the Touareg. Really hoping for a quick fix since I need the car for work this week. Good to know about the sensitivity of these connections. Will make sure they take extra care when reassembling everything this time to prevent future steering failure issues.
