Thanks for sharing that experience. Same happened with my 2015 Tiguan last summer. After the repair I had no more traction control issues or limp mode problems. My transmission is working perfectly now. Did your repair bill end up being reasonable? And has everything been working fine since the fix? Just wondering if any other related problems showed up later with the powertrain or transfer case.

Great to hear your Tiguan is running well now. My repair experience had a surprisingly good outcome, the fix was actually covered under an extended warranty campaign for the ABS system faults that were triggering the transfer case limp mode issues. Total cost was 0€ since it was a known issue. The powertrain control module needed a software update to properly communicate with the ABS sensors, but once that was done, all the transmission hunting and gear selector problems cleared up completely. Been driving it for over a year now with zero issues, no more transmission slipping or powertrain malfunction warnings. If anyone else experiences similar symptoms, its worth checking if there are any warranty extensions before paying for repairs, since these control module issues were fairly common on our generation of VW vehicles.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I ended up taking it to a certified VW shop that specializes in transmission diagnostics. The torque converter was fine but they found multiple fault codes in the control module. The diagnostic scan revealed bad wheel speed sensors throwing off the whole system. Total repair came to 850€ including parts and labor. They cleared all the diagnostic trouble codes and reprogrammed the transmission control unit. Been driving it for 3 months now without any issues. No more limp mode, rough shifting is gone, and the transmission feels smooth again. Glad I got it properly diagnosed instead of rushing into major transmission work. The shop was really thorough in explaining everything and showing me the diagnostic results. Would definitely recommend getting a full system scan before assuming the worst with transmission problems. Sometimes its just sensors and modules causing the symptoms rather than mechanical failure.

The symptoms you describe match what happened with my VW Touareg TDI 2012 last winter. The transmission behavior suggests more than just a transmission issue, it could be related to the ABS system triggering fault codes that affect the powertrain control module. When experiencing similar symptoms, diagnostic trouble codes revealed that faulty ABS wheel speed sensors were sending incorrect signals to the transfer case control module. This caused the transmission control unit to receive conflicting information, resulting in gear hunting and limp mode activation. The repair process required: Full system diagnostic scan, Testing of wheel speed sensors, Clearing multiple consequential fault codes, Recalibration of the powertrain control module, Verification of transfer case operation Initial symptoms pointed to transmission failure, but the root cause was the ABS system creating a chain reaction of system malfunctions. This turned out to be a serious issue requiring specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise. Recommend having a complete diagnostic scan before allowing any major transmission work. Many transmission symptoms can be caused by external sensors and control modules rather than internal transmission damage.
