Thanks for sharing your experience with the DPF issue. I had the exact same problem with my Tiguan last summer, including the exhaust smoke and significant power loss. The vehicle inspection confirmed it was indeed the diesel filter causing trouble. Did the repair cost fall within the typical 900-1200€ range? Just curious since prices seem to vary quite a bit. Also wondering if youve noticed any changes in fuel efficiency since getting it fixed? My car runs much smoother now but Id like to know if you experienced any other issues with the exhaust system or backpressure afterward.

The repair costs actually came in higher at 1550€ for my Touareg DPF replacement, but it was worth every cent. The exhaust system now functions perfectly and the engine runs at full power again. Since the filter replacement, fuel efficiency has improved noticeably, getting about 15% better mileage compared to when the DPF was clogged. The engine light hasnt come back on and regeneration cycles are working as they should. No issues with backpressure or any other exhaust-related problems in the months following the repair. The mechanics did a thorough job checking all connected components while the system was apart. Regular driving keeps the new filter functioning properly through normal regeneration cycles. One tip: using high-quality fuel and maintaining steady highway speeds occasionally helps prevent future filter problems by allowing proper regeneration to occur naturally.

After getting multiple opinions from the forum, I finally took my Tiguan to a certified VW specialist. Really glad I did, the repair bill came to 1100€, which included a complete DPF cleaning and system check. Way better than my previous shop experience. The mechanic walked me through the whole process, showing how the clogged diesel filter was causing the power loss and smoke issues. They also checked the backpressure sensors and regeneration system while doing the work. Total repair time was about 5 hours. Been driving for a few weeks now and the difference is remarkable. No more black smoke, engine power is back to normal, and fuel efficiency has definitely improved. The exhaust system works perfectly during daily commutes, and the regeneration cycles are happening as they should. Looking back, wish I had addressed this sooner before the filter got so clogged. But at least now I know what to watch for and when to get it checked. Thanks everyone for helping me understand what I was dealing with before heading to the shop.

Dealt with nearly identical symptoms on my 2012 VW Touareg TDI last season. The reduced power and exhaust smoke strongly indicate a clogged diesel particulate filter. The sensor fault warning appeared on my dash shortly after noticing the performance drop. The regeneration process had failed multiple times, leading to filter replacement becoming necessary. This is a serious issue that requires prompt attention, as continued driving can lead to more extensive engine damage and further reduce fuel efficiency. The repair process involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal and replacement of the particulate filter, ECU reset and system checks, Multiple test drives to confirm proper regeneration cycles Total shop time was about 6 hours. Important to note that pushing the engine too hard with a clogged filter can cause turbo problems, which would significantly complicate repairs. Would strongly suggest having it checked soon, as these symptoms typically worsen quickly. Make sure the shop is experienced with VW diesel exhaust systems, as proper diagnostic equipment is essential for this repair.
