VW Tiguan Cruise Control System Complete Failure Fix

Looking for advice on my 2012 VW Tiguan TDI where the cruise control stopped working completely. When scanning the car, it shows error codes related to the cruise control system. The cruise control switch on the steering wheel seems to respond normally but the system wont engage at all. Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? Particularly interested in hearing what parts needed replacement and rough repair costs. The speed sensor and dashboard lights all seem to work fine otherwise, so Im a bit stuck on where to start troubleshooting.

Had this exact issue on my 2010 VW Touran TDI. As someone with moderate car repair experience, I first checked the basic stuff like fuses and throttle position sensor connections, but the cruise control still refused to engage. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed a faulty wiring connection between the steering wheel cruise control switch and the main control module. The cables had worn through over time from regular steering movement. Total repair cost was 95€ for diagnosing and fixing the connection issue. Before you proceed with repairs, could you share: Have you checked if the cruise control fuse is intact? Does the brake pedal switch work properly? When you tap the brake, do the brake lights come on immediately? Are there any other warning lights on the dashboard? Can you share the specific error codes from your scan? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or if it might be something different. The cruise control system has multiple components that need to work together, including the throttle position sensor and speed sensor, so pinpointing the exact issue is important.

Just had my 150000km service last month. Based on my experience, check the pedal switch first. The brake pedal switch controls both brake lights and disengages cruise control, when mine failed, cruise control stopped working completely. The switch is an inexpensive part (around 35€) and fairly simple to replace. Got the same error codes you mentioned, but discovered the real issue was the switch, not the steering wheel controls or wiring. If your brake lights work inconsistently, that confirms the pedal switch as the likely culprit. Also worth checking if your dashboard lights show any other warnings when trying to engage cruise control. Would be helpful to know the exact error codes from your scan to confirm.

Thanks for sharing those details. Yes, same issue on my 2010 Touran too. After reading about your pedal switch experience, I double-checked mine and you're absolutely right. The brake pedal switch was indeed the culprit in my case too, not the wiring as initially suspected by the workshop. The brake lights were working intermittently and the cruise control would out of nowhere disengage. Replaced the pedal switch myself for about 35€ and that fixed both issues completely. The clock spring and other steering wheel components were perfectly fine. Important note regarding error codes: they can be misleading. Even though my scan showed communication errors between modules, the root cause was simply that faulty pedal switch. The throttle position sensor and speed sensor readings were normal throughout. If anyone else runs into this: check the brake lights behavior first. It's usually the most reliable indicator of a bad pedal switch, even when error codes point elsewhere.

I checked my brake lights and you're right, they're working inconsistently. Had my mechanic scan it again and got error code P0571 (Cruise Control/Brake Switch A Circuit) along with some related communication errors. This definitely matches what others described about the pedal switch being the likely cause. Found the brake pedal switch at a parts store for 32€ and decided to tackle it myself since it seems straightforward. The cruise control buttons on the steering wheel definitely respond normally when pressed, and the fuse box inspection showed all fuses are intact. Makes sense that the pedal switch would cause these symptoms since it needs to disengage cruise control when braking. Thanks for helping narrow this down, saved me from unnecessarily replacing more expensive components like steering wheel modules or wiring harnesses. Will update once I complete the repair.
