VW T-Cross Coil Failure Causes Rough Idle & Stalling

Had my latest service at 60000km just last month and currently at 63970km. Based on your experience, this seems very similar. The rough running and engine stalling is definitely worse on cylinders 1 and 3, confirmed by the mechanic who did a quick check. The misfire is most noticeable when the engine warms up, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Got the codes read and they specifically point to ignition system issues. The spark plugs were replaced during the service, so I am quite confident the ignition coils are the culprit. Planning to have the workshop do a thorough ignition coil test next week to pinpoint exactly which ones need replacement. Hoping its not all of them since these parts can get expensive.

Based on those symptoms and your recent spark plug replacement, I am even more convinced we dealt with the same issue. After my coil connection repair, I actually ended up having to replace two coil packs about 2 weeks later as the engine hesitation returned. The vehicle diagnostics revealed multiple misfires on cylinders 1 and 4. Given your similar mileage and identical engine stalling patterns, I would strongly suggest having all coils tested. While individual coil pack replacement might seem more cost-effective initially, failing coils often indicate the others are likely to follow soon. In my case, the total repair with two coil packs came to 320€ including labor. The engine has been running flawlessly for the past 8 months with no signs of misfiring or rough running. The workshop also mentioned that heat-related coil failures are fairly common on our engine type around the 60000km mark. The fact that your spark plugs are new actually makes diagnosis easier, it effectively rules out spark plug issues and strengthens the case for faulty coil packs being the root cause.

Thanks for sharing those details. After hearing about your similar experience and repair outcome, I feel more confident about tackling my coil pack issues. The check engine light and misfiring symptoms match exactly what you described, especially the part about engine stalling getting worse with heat. Given the identical problems at similar mileage points, I will probably follow your advice and have all coils checked even if only cylinders 1 and 3 are currently showing problems. The 320€ repair cost seems reasonable considering the potential for other coils to fail soon anyway. Going to keep my workshop appointment for next week. Since the vehicle diagnostics already point to the ignition system and we can rule out spark plugs, I expect they will confirm the coil failure diagnosis pretty quickly. Really hoping this fixes the rough running and engine hesitation issues completely like it did in your case. Will report back once the repair is done, might help others who run into similar coil problems around the 60000km mark. Thanks again for sharing your repair experience.

Had almost the exact same issue with my 2021 VW T-Roc last winter. With some experience working on VWs, I can say ignition coil failure symptoms match what you describe, the engine stalling and rough running are classic signs. My car showed similar engine hesitation and jerking during acceleration. After scanning, the workshop confirmed a faulty connection between the ignition coil and the spark plug on cylinder 2. They found the cable connection was damaged, likely from heat stress. The fix was straightforward, they repaired the connection and tested all coils. Total cost was 95€ including diagnostics. The engine has been running smoothly since then. Before suggesting more specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage? Are all cylinders affected or does it feel localized? Does the problem get worse when the engine is hot? Have you had the diagnostic codes read? This info would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced. While coil failure is common, proper diagnosis is crucial since spark plug issues can show similar symptoms.
