VW Suran Won't Start: ECU Issue Warning Signs

Looking for advice on engine control issues in my 2016 VW Suran Spacefox (96151km, gasoline). The car wont start at all. My check engine light is on, and Im concerned about getting ripped off at the repair shop after a bad experience. The engine fault seems electrical rather than mechanical. Has anyone dealt with similar starting problems? What should I expect for engine diagnostics and what questions should I ask the mechanic to ensure a fair deal?

Had a similar situation with my 2013 VW Golf TSI. The engine stalling and starting issues often trace back to poor battery connections causing ECU failure and electrical system problems. Last service revealed corroded battery terminals affecting voltage supply to the ECU, triggering multiple engine fault codes. The connection issues were causing intermittent power delivery, confusing the engine management system and fuel injection controls. This requires: Complete battery terminal cleaning, Cable connection replacement, ECU diagnostic scan, Potential engine software updates Critical to address quickly as poor connections can damage the ECU over time. The mechanic should show you: Battery voltage readings, Diagnostic scan results, Visual evidence of corrosion, Connection resistance measurements Ask for documentation of all diagnostic steps and confirmation that the engine fault codes clear after repair. While not always a major repair, neglecting electrical issues risks more severe engine control problems. Make sure they check the alternator output and ground connections, as these can present similar symptoms. Request a full electronic systems test after repair to verify all engine control modules function correctly.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the VW Golf. Did those check engine light issues ever come back after the repair? My Suran Spacefox is at the shop now for similar ECU issues and Im wondering about long-term reliability. Could you share how much you ended up paying for the diagnostic work and repairs? The fuel injection system seems fine but Im worried about potential hidden problems the mechanic might find during the engine diagnostics.

Just got the car back last week and the engine control malfunction is completely resolved. The check engine light hasnt returned since they fixed the faulty cable connections at the battery. Total repair cost came to 155€, which covered the complete electrical diagnostic work and replacement of corroded battery terminals. The mechanic confirmed the fuel injection system was working fine, it was purely an electrical issue causing the ECU failures. The engine diagnostics showed no other hidden problems once they restored proper power supply to all systems. Important to know: proper battery connection is crucial for preventing ECU issues. The mechanic recommended checking the terminals every 6 months to avoid similar engine control problems in the future. The diagnostic scan now shows all systems working normally, with no error codes present. The repair price was fair considering they had to clean all connection points and verify the entire electrical system. Much cheaper than replacing a damaged ECU, which can happen if these issues go unfixed.

Based on your positive feedback, I went ahead with the repair. The mechanic found corroded battery terminals just like in your case. They performed a full engine diagnostic scan which revealed similar ECU issues affecting the starting system. Total bill came to 180€, slightly more than yours but included a thorough electrical system check. The engine surge problems disappeared completely after they cleaned all connections and replaced the damaged terminals. The repair took about 3 hours. They showed me the diagnostic results before and after, proving the engine fault codes were cleared. I also got a detailed report showing all the testing steps and confirmation that the fuel injection system works properly. Really glad I caught this early. The mechanic demonstrated how poor connections were causing the ECU failure and explained how regular maintenance prevents these issues. No more check engine light and the car starts perfectly now. A much better experience than my previous shop visits. They took time explaining everything and provided full documentation. Definitely worth getting it properly diagnosed rather than risking more serious engine control problems.
