Thanks for sharing your experience with the exhaust flap actuator issue. Just wanted to follow up since I am facing similar problems with my Suran Spacefox. The symptoms you described match exactly what I am experiencing, especially the loud cold starts and inconsistent exhaust sound. Can you remember approximately how much the repair cost for replacing the vacuum lines and actuator? Also curious if you had any other exhaust system issues pop up since getting it fixed? Just trying to budget properly and make sure I address everything while the car is in the shop.

Thanks for asking about the follow-up. After getting the repair done, the exhaust flap issue was completely resolved. The total cost came to 190€ for replacing the flap motor and fixing the vacuum lines. The repair included a full diagnostic of the exhaust system to ensure there were no other underlying issues. Since the fix, the exhaust has been working perfectly, no more loud cold starts or erratic noise levels. The check engine light cleared up and hasnt returned. Its been about 8 months now with no additional exhaust repair needed. The key was finding a shop that specifically knew how to diagnose and repair the flap actuator system. They actually showed me the corroded parts they removed, which helped explain why the exhaust blockage was occurring. The investment was worth it to prevent more extensive exhaust system damage down the line. Make sure whoever does the work properly tests the vacuum lines and calibrates the new flap actuator after installation. A proper repair should include verifying the exhaust flaps are operating correctly at different RPM ranges.

Happy to update you all on how my exhaust flap repair turned out. After getting recommendations here, I found a certified VW specialist who really knew their stuff about exhaust systems. The diagnosis confirmed exactly what was suspected, faulty exhaust valves and vacuum line issues. The repair came to 210€, which included replacing the flap motor and fixing the vacuum lines. The mechanic walked me through the whole process and even showed me the corroded parts they removed from the exhaust system. Engine performance is back to normal now. No more loud cold starts or weird exhaust noise. The check engine light cleared up right after the repair. Most importantly, the exhaust flaps are working properly at all RPMs. Worth mentioning the shop did a full inspection of the entire exhaust system while they had it up on the lift. Really glad I went with a specialist, they caught and prevented what could have become a much bigger problem down the road.

Had a similar issue on my 2013 VW Golf GTI. The exhaust flaps started malfunctioning, causing excessive noise and affecting engine performance. The vacuum-operated exhaust valves were stuck open, leading to that characteristic loud cold start. The main problem was twofold: corrosion on the exhaust flap actuator and a damaged vacuum line. These exhaust components often fail due to constant exposure to heat cycles and environmental factors. The repair involved replacing the complete actuator unit and associated vacuum lines. This is actually a serious issue that shouldnt be ignored. Faulty exhaust flaps can lead to: Reduced engine performance, Failed emissions tests, Potential exhaust blockage, Further damage to other exhaust components The repair requires specific diagnostic equipment to properly test the vacuum system and exhaust valve operation. Make sure the shop has experience with VW exhaust systems, as proper calibration of the new components is essential. Key warning signs that confirmed the diagnosis: Loud exhaust note at specific RPMs, Check engine light with stored codes, Inconsistent exhaust sound, Rattling noise from the rear of the vehicle
