VW Polo Power Steering Column Stuck, Repair Guide

Having trouble with my 2007 VW Polo diesel (114000km). The electric steering column adjustment stopped working completely, and the car shows an error message. Had some bad experiences with repair shops before, so I want to know if anyone has dealt with this issue. How much did the repair cost you, and was it just the electric adjustment motor or something more serious? Looking for recommendations on what to check before heading to a mechanic.

Had a similar steering issue with my 2010 VW Golf TDI at 98000km. The electric adjustment failure started suddenly just like yours. The steering column adjustment stopped responding completely. The problem turned out to be a mechanical fault in the wiring harness connection near the steering column. Over time, the constant movement caused wear on the cables, leading to intermittent connectivity issues before complete failure. Found during inspection that the main cable bundle had several worn spots where it flexed with steering movement. The fix required replacing the entire wiring harness assembly for the electric adjustment system, as individual wire repair was not reliable for this component. This is considered a serious repair since it involves critical steering components and safety systems. The steering column had to be partially disassembled to access and replace the damaged parts. Labor time was significant due to the complex removal process. Important: Before going to a mechanic, check if your steering wheel still moves manually, this helps determine if the issue is isolated to just the electric adjustment system or if there might be additional mechanical problems involved. The repair usually requires specialized diagnostic equipment to properly reset the steering system after component replacement.

Thanks for sharing your Golf experience. That wiring harness failure sounds pretty similar to what I am seeing with my Polo. Getting all these details really helps as I prepare for the repair. Since my steering column adjustment is also completely dead, I wonder if you remember the total cost for fixing your steering issue? Also curious if youve had any other steering related problems pop up since the repair was done.

Had good news after taking it to the mechanic last week. The electronic steering problem was much simpler than expected. Unlike my initial wiring harness issue, it turned out to be just a loose connection at the steering column adjustment motor. The total repair cost was only 95€, which included fixing the cable connection and running a diagnostic check. Much better than the extensive repair I needed on my Golf previously. Since fixing this electric adjustment issue, the steering system has worked perfectly. No additional steering failure messages or problems with the column adjustment. Worth mentioning that a proper diagnostic check is crucial, what looks like a major steering issue can sometimes be resolved with a simple connection fix.

Had the exact same concerns when my electric steering started acting up. Finally took it to a mechanic last Thursday. The diagnosis revealed a basic electric adjustment motor issue, just a loose connection that needed fixing. Total bill came to 180€, mostly diagnostic fees and labor. The mechanic found that the steering column wiring was intact, unlike the complicated harness problems others mentioned. They just had to reconnect and secure the adjustment motor cables properly. The whole repair took about 2 hours. They ran a full system check afterward to make sure no other mechanical faults were hiding. Really relieved it wasnt the expensive repair I feared. The electric steering and column adjustment have been working perfectly since then. Best thing I did was getting it checked early before any potential damage to other steering components. Definitely worth the peace of mind knowing its properly fixed now.
