VW Polo Clutch Switch Failure Causes Multiple Issues

Anyone else had starting issues with a faulty clutch pedal safety switch? My 2001 VW Polo diesel (130614km) is giving me headaches. The car stalling happens out of nowhere, cruise control is dead, and gear display stopped working. Got an error code stored but previous mechanic experience wasnt great. Pretty sure its the clutch pedal safety mechanism acting up, since the car wont start sometimes. Looking for advice on diagnosis and repair costs before heading back to a shop.

Had the same problem with my 2004 VW Golf TDI at 145000km. The clutch pedal safety switch was failing intermittently, causing similar starting issues and safety mechanism malfunctions. The main symptoms matched exactly: unusual stalling, cruise control not working, and gear selector display issues. The safety switch sends incorrect signals to the ECU, making the car think the clutch is not fully pressed when starting. The repair involved replacing the entire clutch pedal safety switch assembly since the original switch contacts had worn out. The wiring harness connecting to the switch also needed inspection as connection pins can get corroded. After replacement, all systems returned to normal operation. This is not a major mechanical issue, but it affects multiple vehicle systems due to modern safety interlocks. The faulty switch confuses the engine management system, leading to those unusual stalls and disabled features. Proper diagnosis requires testing the switch resistance values and checking the signal output. Some owners try cleaning the switch contacts as a temporary fix, but replacement is the reliable solution. Best to get it checked soon as continuing to drive with a failing safety mechanism can leave you stranded.

Thanks for sharing that experience. I was dealing with the exact same electrical fault on my Polo last month. After reading your post, it sounds identical, the clutch switch problems, stalling, and those annoying gear selector display issues. Did you remember roughly what the total repair cost came to? My mechanic quoted 180€ for parts and labor but I wanted to compare. Also curious if you had any other issues pop up after getting the clutch pedal assembly replaced. Sometimes these electrical gremlins can be connected to other problems. Really helpful to know the wiring harness needed checking too. That might explain why car starting is still occasionally sluggish for me, even after the switch replacement.

The repair on my Golf ended up being much cheaper than expected, just 95€ total. The ignition problem turned out to be a loose cable connection at the clutch pedal safety switch rather than needing the entire assembly replaced. The mechanic found slight corrosion on the connector pins but cleaning and reseating the plug fixed the electrical fault completely. Since that repair three months ago, all the original issues cleared up: no more car stalling, cruise control works perfectly, and the gear display is back to normal. The safety mechanism now functions as intended with no unusual starting problems. If your car starting still feels sluggish, definitely have them check those wiring connections again. Sometimes what seems like a failing safety switch can be resolved by properly securing the wiring harness. This costs much less than replacing parts unnecessarily. The mechanic explained that these safety switch problems are common in VW models of our era, but usually the fix is simpler than initially quoted. The key is finding someone who knows to check the connections before jumping to full component replacement.

Thanks for the input. Finally got this sorted last week and wanted to share how it went. Took it to a different mechanic who actually spent time diagnosing the car starting issue properly. Like mentioned above, they found corrosion in the wiring harness near the safety switch. The total repair came to 120€, they cleaned all connections, replaced the faulty switch, and secured the loose wiring. The gear selector display came back to life immediately after the fix. Cruise control is working perfectly now too. No more stalling issues since the repair, and the car starts reliably every time. The clutch pedal safety mechanism is responding exactly as it should. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of paying for unnecessary parts replacement. The first shop wanted to swap out the entire pedal assembly which would have cost way more. Sometimes finding the right mechanic makes all the difference with these electrical problems.
