Last service was 2 months ago at 145763km. Thanks for your detailed response. I checked all the fuses and they seem fine. The volume control on both the head unit and steering wheel responds visually on the display but produces no clicking sound. The issue started completely suddenly during normal operation, one minute sound was working, the next complete radio silence. No error messages appear on the display at all. The auxiliary input also registers when I plug in a device but still no audio output. Will try testing individual speakers as suggested to identify if one might be causing a system-wide short.

Thanks for providing those additional details. Based on your description and comparing it to my similar experience with my 2002 Passat, this does sound like it could be the same speaker short issue I encountered. The sudden complete sound failure without warning is a classic symptom. Since you have already checked the fuses and confirmed the volume control displays are responding normally, we can likely rule out basic electrical issues. The lack of sound output across all audio sources, combined with no error messages, strongly suggests either an amplifier failure or a speaker causing a protective shutdown. Before taking it to a shop, try this quick test I learned: Set volume to medium level, Switch between different audio sources, Listen very carefully near each speaker, Check for any slight buzzing or crackling In my case, the faulty bass speaker had a subtle buzz even during complete radio silence. If you detect anything similar, it can help narrow down which speaker might be causing the issue. The repair cost might be lower than dealer quotes if a bad speaker is indeed causing the audio connectivity problems. Independent shops typically charge 250-400€ for this type of sound system repair, depending on which components need replacement.

Based on your expertise with my Phaeton and those troubleshooting steps, I will carefully test each speaker area as suggested. The symptoms do match up exactly with what you described, particularly the sudden sound system failure without warning. I will pay special attention to any faint buzzing from the car speakers since that could identify the culprit. Having both the USB audio and auxiliary inputs register but produce no sound definitely points toward an amp or speaker issue rather than a head unit problem. I appreciate the tip about the potential repair costs at independent shops versus dealer rates. I will start testing the speakers this weekend and will schedule an appointment with a local car audio specialist if I detect any abnormal sound distortion or buzzing during the tests. This gives me a much clearer direction for diagnosis rather than blindly accepting high dealer quotes. Will update once I identify the source of this radio silence issue.

I had nearly the same sound system issue with my 2002 VW Passat. As someone with moderate experience working on VW audio systems, I understand how frustrating complete radio silence can be. After checking the fuses and basic connections myself, I took it to an independent audio specialist who diagnosed a defective bass speaker that was causing a short in the entire sound system. The repair involved replacing the faulty speaker and recalibrating the audio system, which cost me 280€ total. The symptoms were identical, powered display but complete sound failure across all audio sources. The sound quality returned to normal immediately after the repair, with no sound distortion or other issues since then. Before suggesting specific solutions for your Phaeton, it would help to know: Have you checked the fuses? Does the steering wheel audio control still work? Are there any error messages on the display? Did the issue start suddenly or gradually? Can you hear any clicking when changing volume? The Phaeton shares many car speakers and audio components with other VW models from that era, so there might be similar solutions available. With more details about these symptoms, I can provide more targeted advice based on my experience.
