VW Jetta Hybrid Washer System Failure + Warning Light

My 2016 VW Jetta Hybrid (74786km) has a completely dead windshield washer system. Nothing happens when pressing the stalk, and I suspect it might be connected to the headlight cleaning system fault warning that appeared recently. Has anyone experienced similar issues? Looking for advice before heading back to the shop since my last mechanic visit was quite disappointing.

Had the same issue with my 2019 VW Passat Hybrid. The malfunction turned out to be connected between the washer pump and headlight cleaning system relay. These systems share components, which explains why both stopped working simultaneously. At the garage, they found the main hose connection had deteriorated and the pump wiring harness was corroded. The entire assembly needed replacement since water had seeped into the electrical connections. This was a serious repair requiring partial removal of the front bumper to access the components. The system fault usually starts with intermittent operation before complete failure. When the headlight cleaning system warning appears, it often indicates the shared pump assembly is failing. This is a known issue in these models and requires attention from a technician familiar with hybrid vehicle electrical systems. Worth checking the fuse first, but given both systems are affected, its likely the pump assembly or wiring harness needs replacement. Cleaning the connections might provide temporary relief, but corrosion typically requires complete component replacement.

Thanks for sharing those details about the washer system. I had a similar problem on my 2017 Jetta last winter. The washer fluid completely stopped working and the headlight cleaning system warning kept popping up. After putting it off for weeks, I finally got it fixed and it turned out to be exactly what you described, corroded wiring and a faulty pump assembly. Would you mind sharing what the repair ended up costing you? My bill seemed pretty steep and I am curious to compare. Also, has the system been working properly since the fix? I occasionally get a slight leak near the washer fluid reservoir, but nothing major so far.

The total repair came to 165€ for fixing the cable connection issue at the pump and relay. The malfunction has been completely resolved since the repair, no more system faults or warning lights. The headlight cleaning system now works flawlessly, and the windshield washer performs like new. Regarding the leak you mentioned near the reservoir, this could indicate the repair wasnt fully completed. A proper fix should address all potential leak points in the system. Even a small leak can eventually lead to electrical issues or system malfunctions if left unchecked. The mechanic explained that corrosion in the wiring harness often spreads beyond the initially visible area. Getting the entire affected section replaced rather than just cleaning or patching specific spots helps prevent future issues. In my case, no leaks or problems have occurred in the months since the repair. The washer fluid level stays consistent, and both the windshield and headlight cleaning systems function reliably. When these components are properly repaired, they should work without any issues for years.

Thanks for the input. I finally took my Jetta to a different mechanic last week. The diagnosis matched what was discussed here, a corroded pump assembly and damaged wiring harness causing both the washer and headlight cleaning systems to fail. The repair cost me 220€ which included replacing the entire pump assembly and fixing a small leak they found in the reservoir. Initially I thought this was expensive but after seeing other quotes, it seems reasonable. The mechanic discovered the clog in the main line was causing pressure buildup, which led to the leak. After cleaning all the lines and replacing the damaged parts, everything works perfectly now. No more warning lights or system malfunctions. One tip from my experience: dont wait too long if you notice any washer system issues. The leak in my case would have eventually caused more electrical problems if left unfixed. Really glad I got it sorted before winter.
