VW Fox Parking Heater Failure: Repair Cost Guide

My VW Fox diesel (2010, 18738km) has issues with the auxiliary heater. When trying to activate the parking heater, nothing happens. The climate control system shows an error code stored in memory. After a bad experience with my last mechanic, I am hesitant to return there. Has anyone dealt with similar heater core problems on their Fox? What was the actual issue and how much did the repair cost? Wondering if there might be a temperature sensor malfunction or if its something more serious.

I experienced a similar heating system problem with my 2013 VW Polo 1.6 TDI. The auxiliary heater stopped working completely, and the climate control system showed error codes. Initially thought it was just a temperature sensor issue, but diagnostic testing revealed multiple problems. The main culprit was a defective glow plug in the auxiliary heater unit. This prevented proper starting of the heater system. The blower motor was functioning correctly, but without the glow plug working, the auxiliary heater couldn't initiate the warming process. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal of auxiliary heater unit, Replacement of glow plug assembly, System reset and testing of the ventilation system This was a moderately serious repair requiring specialized knowledge of VW heating systems. The job took about 4 hours to complete. While not the most expensive repair, it needed proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. Based on your symptoms, it sounds very similar to my experience. Would strongly recommend having it checked at a certified VW workshop, as incorrect repairs can lead to more extensive damage to the auxiliary heating system.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Polo heating system repair. I had almost identical issues with my Fox last winter, complete heater failure and error codes on the climate control unit. The symptoms match exactly what you described. My certified workshop also found a faulty glow plug after running diagnostics. While they had the auxiliary heater unit out, they noticed a small coolant leak that needed fixing too. The blower motor was tested and worked fine. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was for yours? Mine came to 480€ including parts and labor, but prices can vary quite a bit. How has your heating system been working since the repair? No other temperature sensor issues or anything?

Good news, since getting my Polo fixed at the certified workshop, the auxiliary heater has been working flawlessly. The total repair cost came to 440€, which included the diagnostic testing, parts replacement, and labor. Slightly less than what you paid, but that makes sense since you had the additional coolant leak to address. The climate control system is now functioning perfectly with no error codes or temperature sensor problems. The heater core starts up immediately when activated and provides consistent warmth. After replacing the defective glow plug, the auxiliary heater fires up reliably every time. Been using it regularly during cold mornings for the past few months without any issues. The repair was definitely worth the investment for having a properly working heating system again.

After hearing about your Polo repair experience, I decided to take my Fox to an authorized VW workshop instead of my regular mechanic. The auxiliary heater symptoms were identical to yours, no response when activated and error codes in the climate control system. The certified technician found both the faulty glow plug and a minor coolant leak near the heater core. The total repair came to 480€, which covered: Full system diagnosis, Glow plug replacement, Coolant leak repair, Resetting the system The repair took about 5 hours but was worth every cent. The auxiliary heater now starts immediately and the temperature sensor readings are accurate. Three months later, the climate control system works perfectly with no error codes or heating issues. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who misdiagnosed a similar problem and charged for unnecessary repairs. Sometimes paying a bit more for certified expertise saves money in the long run.
