Had my Fox in for service at 143496km and the mechanic found the issue. The air distribution flap motor had failed, causing poor air circulation and inconsistent heating. Error code P0533 was stored in the system. A new actuator motor and connector assembly fixed both the heating output and climate control panel errors. Total repair was 180€ including diagnostic time. The ventilation system now works perfectly, proper heat output and no more windshield fogging issues.

Thanks for sharing the repair details. Glad you got it sorted! This matches exactly what happened with my Polo too, though my repair was a bit cheaper since only the connector needed replacement rather than the full actuator motor. The P0533 error code is definitely a telltale sign of air distribution flap problems in these VW HVAC units. When the actuator motor fails, it really impacts the whole climate control system performance. The poor heating output you experienced is classic for this issue since the system cant properly direct the airflow. Anyone else having similar symptoms should definitely get their air distribution system checked, particularly the flap motor and connections. A properly working actuator is crucial for both heating performance and preventing windshield fogging problems. Your repair cost of 180€ seems reasonable considering they replaced the complete actuator assembly. These parts tend to be quite reliable once replaced, so you should have trouble-free heating for years to come.

Thanks for the input. Wanted to close this thread with my final update since it might help others. After taking my Fox to the workshop at 143496km, they pinpointed the problem. The temperature regulation issues stemmed from a failed air distribution flap motor, which explained both the poor heating and airflow problems. The stored error code P0533 confirmed their diagnosis. The repair involved installing a new actuator motor and connector assembly, which resolved both the weak heating output and the climate control panel errors. Total cost came to 180€ including diagnostic time. The blower motor and heater core were fine, just as some of you suggested. Really happy with the results, the ventilation system now works exactly as it should. Getting proper heat output and no more issues with windshield fogging. Good to have proper climate control working again, especially during cold weather.

I had a very similar issue with my 2009 VW Polo diesel. With some experience working on VW ventilation systems, I can share what happened in my case. The symptoms were almost identical, weak heating performance and dashboard panel errors related to the climate control system. My workshop diagnosed it as a faulty connection in the air circulation control module. The heater core itself was fine, but the system wasnt getting proper signals to adjust the air flow. The technician found that the cable connection to the defrost flap actuator had deteriorated, causing intermittent operation and windshield fogging issues. The repair involved replacing the wiring connector and recalibrating the flap positions. Total cost was 95€ for parts and labor. Before suggesting specific fixes for your Fox, it would help to know: Which error code is stored in your system? Does the issue happen only at certain fan speeds? Are you experiencing any unusual noises from behind the dashboard? Have you noticed changes in the windshield defrosting performance? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or if its something different in the ventilation system.
