VW Fox AC System Dead: Complete Cooling Failure Alert

My 2005 VW Fox diesel has stopped cooling completely. The AC system shows no signs of life, no engagement sound from the compressor and the blower motor stays silent when the AC button is pressed. Temperature control seems unresponsive too. Looking for insights from others who dealt with similar AC problems, particularly interested in hearing what parts needed replacement and rough repair costs. Has anyone had the AC relay or compressor replaced for similar symptoms? Not interested in DIY fixes, just want to know what to expect at the workshop.

I had nearly identical issues with my 2003 VW Lupo diesel last summer. With some experience working on VW AC systems, I can share what happened in my case. The symptoms matched exactly, no compressor engagement, silent blower motor, and complete AC failure. After checking the AC relay and pressure switch, my workshop found defective control valves in the AC system that were preventing proper operation. The repair involved: Full system diagnosis, Replacement of faulty control valves, Refrigerant recovery and recharge, Testing of blower motor function, AC maintenance including filter replacement Total cost came to 1000€ including parts and labor. The AC has worked flawlessly since the repair. Before suggesting more specific solutions, could you provide: Mileage on your Fox, Any previous AC repairs or maintenance, Whether you hear any AC noise when turning the system on, If the blower motor works on regular ventilation settings This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the valve system or if it might be something else. Common problems with these VW models often trace back to either the AC relay or the control valve assembly, but proper diagnosis is essential before any repairs.

Thanks for the detailed response. My Fox has 137520km and had its last major service 3 months ago, including AC maintenance. Since then, no cooling system work was done. To answer your questions: the blower motor stays completely silent in all settings, including regular ventilation. There is zero noise when engaging the AC button. The AC diagnostics during the last service showed everything was fine, so this sudden failure is quite puzzling. The refrigerant leak possibility you mentioned makes sense, but would that also explain why the blower isnt working at all? The complete silence from both the blower and compressor seems unusual based on what you described with your valve issue. Would be great to hear if anyone else has experienced total system shutdown like this rather than gradual AC performance decline.

This definitely sounds different from my valve issue, especially since your blower motor isnt working at all in any setting. The complete lack of blower motor function points to either an electrical problem or blower motor failure, separate from the AC system itself. In my Lupo case, the blower motor still worked fine for regular ventilation even when the AC was failing. Since yours is completely silent, I strongly suspect either: 1. A blown fuse serving the blower motor circuit 2. A faulty blower motor relay 3. The blower motor itself has failed The fact this happened right after service makes me think something might have been disturbed during the maintenance work. When my AC relay failed previously, it only affected the compressor engagement, not the blower motor function. Based on my experience with these VW models, I suggest having the workshop check: All fuses related to the AC system and blower motor, The blower motor relay and AC relay separately, Electrical connections to the temperature control module, The blower motor resistance unit A full electrical diagnosis should only cost around 100€ and could save replacing parts unnecessarily. My guess would be the blower motor or its relay, which typically runs 200-400€ installed depending on parts availability.

Your AC issues definitely seem more serious than what was described for the Lupo. With complete system failure immediately after service, I am concerned about potential electrical problems affecting multiple components. Since my car has 137520km and was just serviced, the sudden total failure is especially concerning. No AC noise or blower function in any mode suggests this goes beyond just AC relay or refrigerant leak issues. I will take it back to the workshop that did the recent service. Based on the feedback here, I will ask them to: 1. Check all electrical components including fuses and relays 2. Test the blower motor functionality separately 3. Run full AC diagnostics to compare with readings from 3 months ago 4. Inspect all connections that were accessed during maintenance The 200-400€ range for blower motor replacement seems reasonable if that turns out to be the issue. But first I want them to do proper electrical testing to avoid unnecessary parts replacement. Will update once I know more about what is causing both the AC efficiency loss and complete blower failure. Thanks for helping narrow down the likely problem areas.
