VW Eos Exhaust Sensor Issues Killing Performance

My 2008 VW Eos recently started showing signs of trouble with the exhaust system. The check engine light is on, power feels noticeably reduced, and fuel consumption has increased significantly. Initial research suggests a faulty exhaust temperature sensor might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their Eos? Would be great to hear about repair experiences, particularly the diagnostic process and what parts needed replacement. Also interested in knowing if sensor replacement alone solved the issue or if other exhaust components were involved. Any insights on repair costs would be helpful too.

I had a similar issue with my 2006 VW Golf GTI last year and have some experience working with VW cars. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, reduced power, higher fuel consumption, and engine warning light. The exhaust system leak diagnosis required proper emission control testing. In my case, the temperature sensor was indeed faulty, but there was also damage to the catalytic converter mounting. The engine management system was registering incorrect exhaust temperature readings, triggering the check engine light. The total repair cost was 265€, which included sensor replacement and fixing the exhaust mounting points. The repair significantly improved performance and brought fuel consumption back to normal levels. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you provide: Current mileage on your Eos, Any unusual sounds from the exhaust area, Whether the engine management light is constant or flashing, Recent service history, especially exhaust work, Any noticeable exhaust smell in the cabin This information would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced with my Golf GTI and allow for more specific recommendations about potential repairs. In the meantime, I suggest having the error codes read. This will confirm if the temperature sensor is actually causing the problem, as there could be other exhaust-related issues triggering these symptoms.

Had my last service about 2 months ago at 67844km. After getting the error codes read, it turns out both the exhaust temperature sensor and oxygen sensor were showing problems. The readings indicated the exhaust sensor was sending irregular signals. My exhaust emission values are also off according to the diagnostic report. There is a slight rattling noise from the exhaust area, especially when cold. No unusual smells in the cabin though. The check engine light stays constant, not flashing. Looks like I need to focus on sensor replacement before checking other exhaust components. For anyone interested, I will share the repair costs and details once fixed. These emission control issues seem common on VWs from this era.

Thanks for the additional details. The irregular signals from your exhaust temperature sensor match what I experienced with my Golf GTI. The combination of faulty temperature and oxygen sensors explains the emission control issues and power loss. The rattling noise when cold suggests possible loosening of exhaust components, similar to my case. While sensor replacement is the primary concern, have the mounting points checked during repair. Temperature fluctuation from faulty sensors can sometimes cause mounting brackets to weaken over time. My repair process involved: Heat sensor replacement: 120€, Oxygen sensor: 95€, Labor costs: 50€, Additional mounting hardware: 35€ Performance improved immediately after fixing both sensors. Fuel consumption returned to normal within two tank fills. The rattling also disappeared after securing the loose mounting points. Remember to ensure proper calibration of the new sensors during installation. My mechanic mentioned that incorrect sensor calibration can lead to continued temperature fluctuation issues, even with new parts. Looking forward to hearing how your repair turns out. Based on the diagnostic report, you should see similar improvements once the sensors are replaced.

Thanks for the feedback. Just got my car back from the shop and wanted to share the outcome. The total repair came to 330€, slightly higher than expected but worth it. They replaced both the exhaust temperature sensor and oxygen sensor, plus fixed two loose mounting brackets causing the rattling. The engine management system is now working correctly with no more check engine light. Fuel consumption has returned to normal and the power loss issue is completely resolved. The temperature fluctuation problems are gone and emissions are back within spec. For reference, parts and labor breakdown: Exhaust temperature sensor: 135€, Oxygen sensor: 105€, Mounting brackets and hardware: 40€, Labor: 50€ The car runs like new again. Glad I addressed this before it caused damage to other exhaust components. The diagnostic readings helped pinpoint the exact problems, saving time and money on unnecessary repairs.
