VW Bora Parking Aid Failure & Check Engine Light Alert

My parking assistant suddenly stopped working and the check engine light came on. The error seems related to the parking aid system. Wondering if anyone has dealt with similar issues and what the repair costs were? Could it be faulty parking sensors or something more serious with the control module? Car details: 2002 VW Bora 1.6L Gasoline 52867

Had the same issue on my 2005 VW Golf with the 1.4L gasoline engine. The parking sensors stopped working completely during reverse maneuvers and the system warning appeared on the dash. The root cause was corrosion in the wiring harness connecting the ultrasonic sensors to the parking aid control module. Moisture had gotten into the main connector plug at the rear bumper, causing intermittent connection issues and false obstacle detection signals. The fix required: Removing the rear bumper, Replacing the faulty wiring harness, Installing new weatherproof connectors, Recalibrating the parking aid system This is a known weak point that often affects the rearview camera and parking sensor systems on these models. While not a safety-critical issue, it should be addressed to prevent further corrosion damage to the control module. The repair complexity is moderate since it involves detailed electrical diagnosis and removing body panels. Would recommend having it checked soon, as continuing to operate with compromised connections can damage the more expensive control module.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the parking sensor repairs. My car had similar symptoms and I am considering getting it fixed. Just wanted to check, do you remember roughly what you paid for the complete repair? Also curious if you have had any other electrical gremlins pop up since the repair was done, particularly with the blind spot sensors or parking assist system? The faulty wiring issues seem quite common on these models based on what others have posted. Just trying to budget appropriately and determine if I should expect any related problems down the road with the control module.

After getting it checked by the mechanic, my parking aid fault was successfully resolved. It turned out to be a much simpler fix than initially expected, just a loose connection in the wiring harness that feeds the proximity sensors. Total repair cost was 95€, which included diagnosing and fixing the faulty wiring. Since the repair six months ago, all parking assist features have worked flawlessly. The blind spot sensors and rearview camera are functioning normally with no electrical issues. The mechanic mentioned these problems often stem from basic connection issues rather than failed control modules. For reference, a complete control module replacement would have cost significantly more, around 450-600€. Getting it checked early likely prevented more extensive damage to the system. The radar sensors and other components were all tested and showed no signs of deterioration. If your symptoms match what I experienced, there is a good chance it is a straightforward wiring fix rather than a major component failure.

Just wanted to update everyone, I took my car to the mechanic yesterday after reading the helpful responses here. The diagnosis confirmed a similar wiring issue with the parking sensors. The control module was testing fine, but there was significant corrosion in the main connector. The total repair came to 120€, which included cleaning the connections and replacing some damaged wiring near the proximity sensors. The mechanic had it done in about 2 hours. All parking assist functions are now working perfectly, the blind spot sensors, parking sensors and rearview camera are all back to normal. Much cheaper than I feared and definitely worth fixing before it could cause more expensive damage. The check engine light is now off and the system works like new. Really glad I caught this early rather than waiting for the control module to fail. Thanks again for the advice. This seems to be a common issue that others might run into, so hopefully this helps someone else diagnose similar symptoms.
