Thanks for sharing your experience. Your symptoms sound identical to what happened with my Beetle last year. A proper transmission flush and oil replacement did fix the issue for me, though I am wondering if I need to keep an eye on the voltage regulator you mentioned. Did you remember roughly how much you paid for the full repair? And has the transmission been behaving normally since the fix? I am trying to budget for potential repairs and would like to know what to expect cost-wise if my automatic transmission needs similar work.

The full repair resolved all the transmission problems completely, my Golf GTI has been shifting perfectly for the past 8 months. The transmission warning light never came back after fixing the undervoltage issue and replacing the transmission oil. The total bill came to 240€ for diagnosing and fixing the voltage regulator problem. The automatic gearbox needed that fresh transmission oil to get back to normal operation, but the electrical repair was surprisingly affordable compared to what I initially feared. Regular transmission maintenance is worth every cent when you consider how expensive a full car transmission replacement would be. Since the repair, I have had zero issues with gear changes or warning lights. The car transmission feels as smooth as new. Would definitely recommend getting any voltage-related issues checked early rather than waiting for potential damage to the automatic gearbox components. The investment in proper diagnosis and repair saved me from much costlier problems down the road.

Thanks for the advice. I took my Beetle to a different mechanic who specializes in automatic transmissions, and the experience was much better than my previous shop visits. The diagnostic showed my car transmission had both low fluid levels and degraded oil quality. They performed a complete transmission oil replacement using the correct specification fluid, which cost 180€ including labor. The mechanic also checked the voltage regulator but found it working normally. After the service, the automatic gearbox immediately felt smoother. The warning light disappeared, and the transmission performance returned to normal. The emergency mode issue hasnt come back in the past two weeks. What a relief it was just a maintenance issue rather than a major repair. The mechanic recommended scheduling regular transmission oil changes every 60000km to prevent similar problems. Will definitely stick to that schedule from now on to protect the automatic transmission. Good to know about watching for potential voltage regulator issues though. Will keep an eye on any electrical symptoms that might affect the transmission in the future.

Had a similar issue with my 2015 VW Golf GTI when the automatic gearbox started showing those exact symptoms. The transmission warning light came on during highway driving, and the car went into limp mode with limited gear changes. The root cause turned out to be more than just old transmission oil. The transmission control module was getting undervoltage due to a failing voltage regulator. A transmission flush alone would not have fixed it. The repair required: 1. Full diagnostic scan 2. Replacement of the voltage regulator 3. Complete transmission oil replacement with the correct specification fluid 4. Control module reset and adaptation This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since continuing to drive could have caused permanent transmission damage. After the repair, the automatic gearbox returned to shifting smoothly with no warning lights. The transmission flush and fresh hydraulic fluid were necessary parts of the fix, but the electrical issue was the primary culprit. Would strongly suggest having a proper diagnostic done rather than assuming its just old fluid. These symptoms in VW transmissions often point to electrical or control issues beyond routine maintenance.
