VW Atlas Transmission Slipping & Grinding, Fix Guide

Having issues with my 2018 VW Atlas automatic transmission that has me worried. The transmission slips between gears and makes grinding noises during shifts. Both check engine and transmission warning lights are on. Error codes suggest a torque converter lock-up clutch problem. Has anyone dealt with similar transmission repair symptoms? Would appreciate hearing about your experience with fixing this, especially regarding workshop repairs and costs involved. Really want to understand if this points to converter failure or if there might be other causes to investigate first.

I had a very similar issue with my 2016 VW Tiguan with the automatic transmission showing identical symptoms. As someone with moderate experience working on cars, I recognized the warning signs you describe right away. My transmission started slipping between gears and making those grinding noises during shifts. The lock-up clutch in the torque converter was indeed the culprit, leading to complete converter failure. After diagnostic testing, the workshop confirmed the automatic gearbox needed major work. The transmission repair involved replacing the entire torque converter assembly. Total cost was 2120€ including parts and labor. While expensive, it completely resolved the issues and the transmission has worked flawlessly since. Before you proceed with repairs, it would help to know: Current mileage on your Atlas, When did these symptoms first appear, Have you noticed any transmission fluid leaks, Does the problem get worse when the engine is hot, What specific error codes are you getting This information would help determine if your automatic transmission issues match what I experienced and whether you might be facing similar converter failure symptoms. Consider having a transmission specialist perform a thorough diagnostic. The sooner these issues are addressed, the better chance of preventing more extensive damage to the automatic gearbox components.

The transmission repair shop fixed my Atlas at 106700km. The mechanic found metal shavings in the fluid and confirmed a failing torque converter as the root cause. Engine surge during acceleration completely disappeared after they replaced the converter assembly. Transmission shifts smoothly now with no grinding sounds. Total repair came to 2350€ but gave me peace of mind knowing the automatic gearbox got proper attention before catastrophic converter failure could occur.

Good to hear the repair resolved your transmission issues. Had the same situation with my Tiguan where metal debris in the fluid confirmed converter fault. These VW automatic transmissions are generally reliable, but when the torque converter starts failing, quick action prevents bigger problems. Your repair cost was close to what I paid (2120€ vs 2350€). The slight difference likely comes down to parts pricing changes since my repair. Engine surge during acceleration is a classic symptom that disappears once the converter is replaced. The key was catching it before complete automatic transmission failure. When metal particles show up in the fluid, it means internal wear has started. Your mechanic made the right call replacing the full converter assembly rather than attempting a partial fix. Keep an eye on fluid levels during your regular maintenance. Early detection of transmission issues can help avoid another major repair down the road.

Thanks for the great info about your repair experience. Really puts my mind at ease knowing the transmission repair fixed similar symptoms. The metal debris in my fluid definitely had me worried, but the new torque converter solved both the grinding and engine surge issues. Even though 2350€ was a big hit to the wallet, my automatic gearbox shifts like new again. Will definitely stay on top of checking transmission fluid levels from now on to catch any future problems early. Good reminder about watching for wear indicators before facing complete converter failure again.
