VW Atlas Exhaust Leak Causes Cabin Smell & Rough Idle

Thanks for the detailed diagnosis explanation. My Atlas has 58414km and had its last major service 3 months ago. After getting it scanned at a local shop, they found code P0420 pointing to catalytic converter efficiency below threshold. This aligns with my symptoms and your experience with the oxygen sensor. They said the readings indicate the catalytic converter might be clogged, restricting exhaust flow. The exhaust smell definitely gets worse under load. Would you suggest getting both the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor checked, since they work together in the exhaust system? Trying to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily but want a proper fix.

Based on the P0420 code and your symptoms, this does sound more severe than my initial Tiguan issue. After seeing oxygen sensor issues on multiple VWs, I learned that the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor work as a team to manage emissions. In my case, even after replacing the oxygen sensor, I actually ended up needing a new catalytic converter about 6 months later. The clogged converter was causing back pressure, which explains your exhaust smell getting worse under load. The NOx sensors were also showing irregular readings, indicating the exhaust wasnt flowing properly. My final repair included: New catalytic converter, Both oxygen sensors replaced, Complete exhaust system inspection for leaks, System recalibration Total cost was 1250€, but it completely resolved the issues. One useful learning: the exhaust leak smell often means theres restriction in the system, forcing gases out through small leaks or gaskets. Looking at your mileage and symptoms, I recommend having both components checked. While its a bigger initial investment, it prevented me from having to go back to the shop twice. The catalytic converter efficiency code usually means the converter itself needs attention, not just the sensors.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your detailed explanation really helped me understand the possible issues with my Atlas. The P0420 code and matching symptoms definitely point to the catalytic converter being the main culprit. I made an appointment with my mechanic for next week to have both the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor thoroughly inspected. Makes sense to check both since they work together, and I want to avoid multiple trips to the shop. The exhaust leak symptoms getting worse under load seem to confirm the restricted flow theory you mentioned. Having seen the cost breakdown from your repair helps me budget for what might be coming. While 1250€ is significant, fixing it properly the first time and addressing both components seems like the smart approach. Will update once I get the final diagnosis and repairs completed. Appreciate you taking the time to share your similar experience, really helped narrow down the likely causes of my engine light and exhaust system problems. Having that P0420 code information really confirmed what we need to look at.

Had a similar issue with my 2014 VW Tiguan. With some experience working on VWs, the symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, engine light, rough running and exhaust leak symptoms. In my case, the Lambda sensor was completely failed, causing incorrect fuel mixture and that typical exhaust smell entering the cabin. The rough running when cold is a classic sign of this problem. My malfunction initially made me think it was the catalytic converter, but the diagnostic showed otherwise. The workshop performed: Full diagnostic scan, Lambda sensor replacement, Exhaust system inspection, System reset Total cost was 375€ for parts and labor. After the fix, all symptoms disappeared and the engine light cleared. To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Current mileage, Any recent repairs, Check engine light codes if you have them, Does the exhaust smell get worse during acceleration The Atlas has a similar exhaust system setup to the Tiguan, but there might be some model-specific aspects to consider. Getting this information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced.
