VW Arteon Engine Misfires Causing Power Loss

My 2018 VW Arteon is giving me serious trouble lately. The engine runs rough, especially during acceleration when it jerks noticeably. The check engine light came on recently and the car feels significantly down on power. I suspect cylinder misfire issues based on how it drives. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for insights on what your mechanic found and how they resolved it. The main concern is getting an idea of potential repair costs and time needed for the fix. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

I had very similar issues with my 2016 VW Passat last year. As someone with some experience working on VW engines, these symptoms immediately pointed to potential fuel delivery problems. The engine misfiring and rough running, especially during acceleration, turned out to be caused by a faulty fuel injector. The poor throttle response and power loss were classic signs. The workshop diagnosed it using specialized diagnostic equipment that confirmed the injector was not spraying fuel properly. The repair involved: Removing and testing all fuel injectors, Replacing one defective injector, Cleaning the fuel rail, Replacing related seals, Full system diagnostic check Total cost was 515€ and the repair took about 4 hours. Since the fix, the engine has been running smoothly with no misfiring issues. To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Current mileage on your Arteon, Whether the issue happens more when the engine is cold or warm, If you notice any unusual fuel consumption, What trouble codes the check engine light is showing This information would help determine if your symptoms match what I experienced with the injector failure.

Last service was at 80000km, so pretty recent. I checked the error codes with my OBD reader and it showed P0303 and P0304, pointing to combustion misfire in cylinders 3 and 4. The rough idle is most noticeable when the engine is cold, and it smooths out somewhat after warming up. After reading your reply, I wonder if my issue might be different since the ignition coils werent mentioned. The check engine light starts flashing during heavy acceleration, which seems to match typical coil pack failure symptoms. The throttle response is also very inconsistent. Does injector replacement also fix the flashing CEL during acceleration? I would prefer to avoid throwing parts at it without a proper diagnosis.

Based on those error codes and symptoms, particularly the flashing check engine light during acceleration, your issue does sound more like ignition coil failure rather than the injector problems I dealt with. My fuel injector issue never caused a flashing CEL. The combustion misfire in cylinders 3 and 4, combined with the cold-start symptoms, strongly suggests failing ignition coils. When I had my injector problem, the misfire was more consistent across all operating conditions, not mainly during cold starts and heavy acceleration like yours. In my case, the throttle response issues were tied directly to fuel delivery. Your symptoms align more closely with ignition system problems, where the coils fail to deliver consistent spark under load. A proper diagnosis would likely involve: Testing ignition coil resistance, Checking spark plug condition, Verifying coil pack voltage, Monitoring live misfire data For reference, ignition coil replacement typically costs around 280€ for parts and labor, significantly less than my injector repair. The job usually takes about 2 hours. Would recommend having the coils and spark plugs inspected before pursuing other repairs.

Thanks for the detailed responses. After getting my car checked at the workshop today, you were right about the ignition system being the culprit. The mechanic found two failing ignition coils and all spark plugs were pretty worn. The total repair came to 295€, including: 2 new ignition coils, Complete set of spark plugs, Labor costs, System diagnostic check The check engine light is now off and the engine runs perfectly smooth again, even during hard acceleration. No more cylinder misfire issues or rough idle problems. The repair only took about 2 hours as predicted. Really appreciate the help in narrowing down the issue. Having that knowledge before going to the shop helped me avoid unnecessary parts replacement and kept the costs reasonable.
