VW Amarok Rough Idle Points to Engine Mount Issues

Looking for advice on my 2014 VW Amarok gas engine with 12876km. Getting rough idle issues and check engine light. Local mechanic suggested its an engine mount failure, but after previous bad repair experiences, I want to get second opinions. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had their engine mount or mounting bracket replaced? What was the repair cost and outcome?

Had similar symptoms on a 2011 VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI. The vibration issues started gradually at idle, getting worse over time. Diagnostic tests revealed a failed mount on the transmission side, with a damaged mounting bracket causing excessive engine movement. The repair involved replacing both the defective engine mount and reinforcing the mounting bracket. A worn electrical connector was also discovered during the repair, which had come loose due to the excessive vibration. The loose connection was contributing to the check engine light. This is typically a serious repair that requires careful attention, as mount wear can lead to additional component damage if left unchecked. The symptoms match what you describe, rough idle and warning lights are classic signs of mount failure in these VW engines. The repair process requires lifting the engine slightly to access the mounts, plus testing all nearby connections and brackets for secondary damage. In my case, the work took a full day at the shop, but prevented more extensive damage to other engine components. A proper diagnosis should include a physical inspection of all mounting points and electronic testing of engine sensors, as mount failures often affect multiple systems.

Thanks for the detailed feedback on the mount replacement. My mechanic is suggesting the same repair for my Amarok. Just wondering, do you remember what the total repair cost was for your mount replacement and bracket work? Also, have you had any similar issues pop up since getting it fixed? The rubber mount on mine is completely shot, so I want to budget correctly and make sure I fix it right the first time.

Since getting the mount repair done on my Tiguan, everything has been running smoothly with no return of the vibration issues. The total cost breakdown was actually interesting, while the initial concern was the rubber mount deterioration, the main expense ended up being related to a faulty cable connection that was causing the check engine light, which cost 95€ to fix. Getting the actual engine mount replaced was the right call, as the mounting bracket showed significant wear from the failing rubber mount. Having proper engine mount alignment has eliminated all the rough idle problems I initially experienced. If your rubber mount is completely failed, you should definitely get it addressed soon. Delaying the repair could lead to additional mounting bracket damage or electrical connection issues like I experienced. A worn engine mount can create a cascade of problems if left unattended.

I went ahead and got the repair done at my regular mechanic after your feedback. The total came to 380€, which included replacing both the failed mount and reinforcing the mounting bracket. They found the same issue you mentioned, a loose connector that was rattling from all the engine movement. The repair took about 6 hours but made a huge difference. The rough idle completely disappeared and the check engine light cleared up right away. The engine sits properly now without any extra vibration or movement. Really glad I got it fixed when I did. The mechanic showed me the old rubber mount and it was completely torn apart. Could have caused some serious problems if left any longer. Car runs like new now and the engine is finally sitting stable in its mounting bracket.
