Voyager Trans Issues: Slipping Gears & Limp Mode Warning

Having issues with my 2010 Chrysler Voyager auto transmission. The gearbox slips and makes rough shifts between gears. The transfer case warning light came on and the car went into limp home mode. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking to hear what repairs were needed and rough repair costs before heading to a workshop. Particularly interested if this was resolved by control module reprogramming or if mechanical work on the torque converter was required.

Had nearly identical issues with a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country. From my moderate experience working on transmissions, these symptoms often point to more than just transmission problems. The key was the transfer case warning light and limp home mode activation. In my case, it turned out the ABS sensor was sending faulty signals to the transmission control module, causing erratic shifting patterns and engaging limp mode unnecessarily. The traction control system was also affected. The gear selector would sometimes feel stuck, and the torque converter seemed to be having trouble engaging properly, all because of those incorrect sensor readings. Got lucky when my regular workshop diagnosed it, they found the ABS system was the root cause. After clearing the fault codes and checking the wiring to the ABS sensors, everything returned to normal operation. Since it was caused by a known issue with the ABS system, the repair was covered under an extended warranty, total cost 0€. Before jumping to transmission repairs, could you share: Are there any ABS or traction control warning lights? Have you noticed any unusual brake behavior? Does the problem get worse when the engine is hot or cold? Are there any stored fault codes you can share? This info would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or if you might be dealing with something different.

Last service was at 48000km. Thanks for sharing your experience. Just had the diagnostic trouble codes read. No ABS or traction control lights, only the powertrain malfunction indicator. The gear selector moves freely between positions but the transmission behavior remains erratic. The transmission shop found code P0740 which points to the torque converter clutch circuit. They mentioned possible solenoid failure or worn clutch material. Unlike your case, my issues persist regardless of engine temperature and seem purely transmission-related. Getting quotes between 2100€-2800€ for torque converter replacement including labor. Hoping someone has experience with rebuilding just the torque converter instead of full replacement to save on costs.

Thanks for the additional details. Unlike my ABS-related case, your P0740 code and symptoms definitely point to the torque converter. I ended up facing similar issues about 20000km later on my Town & Country, and it turned out to be the actual torque converter that time. The transmission shop quoted me 2400€ for a new torque converter, but I found a reputable rebuilder who did it for 1600€ including labor. The rebuild included new clutch material, springs, and solenoid replacement. Been running smoothly for 60000km since then. Just note that while rebuilding can save money, the torque converter needs to be a good candidate for rebuild, if there's significant wear on other components, a full replacement might be the better long-term solution. The control module will also need reprogramming after either repair to ensure proper shifting patterns. The limp home mode activation youre seeing is the transmission protecting itself from further damage. With that P0740 code and no other warning lights, I would focus on the torque converter repair rather than looking at sensor or module issues like in my first case. Would recommend getting a detailed inspection of the valve body while they have the transmission open, these often need attention when the torque converter fails and its cheaper to handle both at once.

I appreciate the detailed feedback about the torque converter repair costs and options. My transmission continues acting up, but at least I have a clearer picture of what Im dealing with and potential costs. The rebuild option at 1600€ sounds more appealing than the 2800€ replacement quote I received. Since my vehicle has relatively low mileage at 48000km, hopefully the torque converter will be a good candidate for rebuilding. Will have the shop check the valve body during the repair as suggested. Makes sense to address any related issues while they already have access. Having the transmission control module reprogrammed afterward should help ensure everything works properly together. Good to know the limp mode activation is protecting the transmission from further damage. Will get this addressed soon before the problem gets worse. Really hoping I can get by with just the torque converter rebuild rather than dealing with more extensive transmission repairs. Will schedule the repair next week and request they inspect everything thoroughly while its apart. Thanks for sharing your repair experience, it helped put my mind at ease about the symptoms and expected costs.
