Thanks for sharing your experience. The symptoms I described did indeed point to a transfer case issue like yours. Really helpful to know the gear grinding was caused by degraded transfer fluid in your case. Did you remember roughly what the total repair cost came to? Also curious if youve had any transmission issues since getting it fixed or if the rebuild solved everything completely? Its been 2 weeks since I first noticed the symptoms and Im trying to budget for potential repairs.

Since having the transfer case oil wear issue fixed 8 months ago, the transmission has performed flawlessly. The repair cost totaled 330€, covering the defective gears replacement in the transfer case and fresh fluid. The gear grinding completely stopped after the rebuild. The transmission shop found similar metallic particles in my old transfer case oil, indicating internal wear. Getting it addressed early prevented more extensive damage to other components. The investment was worth it considering a complete transmission replacement would have cost significantly more. Regular transfer case oil changes are now part of my maintenance schedule to prevent future wear issues. Would suggest moving forward with repairs soon, as waiting typically leads to more extensive mechanical wear and higher costs. The symptoms you describe match what I experienced before the rebuild.

I took your advice seriously and went ahead with the inspection at a transmission specialist last week. The diagnosis confirmed low and contaminated transfer case oil, just as you experienced. Getting it fixed early saved me from a complete transmission rebuild. Total cost came to 280€ for: Transfer case oil change, New seals, Basic gear adjustment, Labor The grinding noise disappeared completely after the repair. The shifts are now smooth and precise like when the car was new. The mechanic showed me the old transfer fluid which was full of metal particles from mechanical wear. The transmission shop was much more thorough than my regular mechanic. They pressure tested the transfer case and found minor leakage that my previous shop missed. Really glad I caught this before more serious damage occurred. Will definitely stick to regular transfer fluid maintenance from now on. Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out promptly.

Had similar symptoms with my 2015 Polo TSI. The rough shifting and slipping turned out to be a serious issue with the transfer case. Initial inspection revealed significant oil leakage from the transfer case seals. The transfer fluid was severely degraded, causing accelerated gear wear inside the case. The metallic particles in the old fluid confirmed internal component damage. Complete disassembly showed multiple worn gear teeth and damaged bearings. Required a full transfer case rebuild including: New seals and gaskets, Replacement of worn gears, Fresh transfer fluid, Recalibration of shift points The repair prevented catastrophic transmission failure. When transfer fluid breaks down, it quickly leads to internal gear wear. Regular fluid changes could have prevented this level of damage. Would recommend getting a specialized transmission shop to do a proper inspection and fluid analysis. These symptoms typically worsen rapidly if left unaddressed, leading to much more extensive repairs.
