Troubleshooting: Black smoke and bumpy engine in Peugeot 4007 - Possible ignition coil defect?

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Peugeot 4007 (built in 2011, gasoline engine). It emits black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, shows the check engine light, has loss of power, and the engine runs rough. When accelerating, the car jerks and won't start. The gas is also burning up faster than usual, it dies at idle, and it shakes when it's idling. I'm really not sure what's going on. But I have a suspicion that the ignition coil is faulty or a misfire is being detected. Have any of you experienced this before? How did you solve the problem and what did your garage say about it? I would appreciate some tips! Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 4008 (built in 2009, petrol engine). I would classify myself as someone with little experience. Like you, I suspected that something was wrong with the ignition coil. When I presented the problem to my garage, it turned out that it was actually the misfire and the engine control unit was faulty. The repair cost me 1000 euros. However, to be able to help you better, it would be helpful if you could share information about your maintenance history and whether you have noticed any other symptoms besides the increased consumption. I hope this helps you.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My last service was at 77424 kilometers and I haven't noticed any other symptoms apart from those mentioned. I'll talk to my garage about the engine control unit, maybe that's my problem too. A thousand euros is a lot of money, but if it helps... well, we'll see. Thanks for the tip anyway!

No problem, you're welcome! Yes, unfortunately the repair can be a bit expensive, but if it helps to fix the problem then it's probably worth it. It's good that you haven't noticed any other symptoms. However, I would still recommend you get the car checked thoroughly to make sure no other problems are being overlooked. And if it really is the engine control unit, your car will probably run like clockwork again after the repair. One last tip: try to find a garage that can give you an accurate diagnosis before they start the repairs. That way you can avoid unexpected costs and you'll know exactly where you stand. Good luck with it and let us know what comes of it!

Great, thanks for the advice and encouragement! Yes, you're right, I should have a thorough inspection and proper diagnosis done soon to make sure nothing is overlooked. I will ask my garage to check the engine control unit and hope their estimate stays within reason. As soon as I have any news, I'll keep you posted! I suspect they will quickly realize what the problem is. Thanks again and see you soon!

That's great to hear, Greg-gti! Ignition coils can indeed cause such symptoms. It's always a good idea to start with simpler and less expensive parts like the ignition coils before moving on to more complex components like the engine control unit. LucasFischFan, you might want to consider this as well. Please keep us updated on your situation. Do you have any other questions or concerns?

Hi Burak, if you've already replaced the ignition coils and spark plugs and the problem persists, it could be a fuel system issue. It might be a clogged fuel injector or a failing fuel pump. I would recommend having your fuel system checked. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?

To check the injector and coil pack wiring for cylinder 1, start by inspecting the wiring harness for any visible damage or loose connections. Ensure the connectors are securely attached to both the injector and coil pack. If everything looks fine, you can use a multimeter to check for continuity in the wires. If you're unsure or uncomfortable with these steps, it's best to consult a professional mechanic. Let me know if you have any further questions!
