Subaru's Black Smoke Signals EGR Valve Trouble

My Subaru Forester (2016, 100454km) has serious performance issues recently, check engine light on, black smoke, rough running and jerking during acceleration. Also noticed loud hissing sounds and higher fuel usage. Mechanic experience last time was terrible, so looking for second opinions. Could this be an EGR valve problem? What were repair costs in your cases? Any recommendations for dealing with these symptoms?

Had similar issues with a 2010 Subaru Legacy. The symptoms match classic EGR valve failure, black smoke from exhaust, rough idle, and increased fuel consumption are typical signs of recirculation system problems. My vehicle showed identical behavior, engine warning light, performance drops, and that distinct hissing sound during acceleration. The EGR valve was completely stuck due to carbon buildup, preventing proper exhaust gas flow. This caused the vehicle emissions to spike well above normal levels. The repair involved removing and cleaning the EGR valve, replacing gaskets, and running diagnostics to ensure proper operation. It was a serious issue that required immediate attention since stuck EGR valves can lead to turbo damage and failed emissions tests if left untreated. For these engines, carbon deposits are a common problem that affects the EGR system. Regular maintenance helps prevent complete failure. Would suggest getting it checked soon, as these symptoms typically worsen and can cause additional engine damage if ignored. Most garages can diagnose EGR issues with proper diagnostic equipment. The repair itself is straightforward for experienced mechanics who regularly work on diesel engines.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the EGR valve repair. Dealing with similar problems on my Forester right now, those symptoms are so familiar, especially the black smoke and rough running. The check engine light also came on recently. Did you remember how much the complete repair cost? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other emissions-related issues? Just trying to budget for potential repairs and want to make sure I catch any related problems early.

Good news on the EGR valve repair front. The automotive repair shop replaced my faulty EGR valve and it cost 355€ total, including parts and labor. The fix completely resolved those troublesome vehicle emissions issues. Since the EGR valve replacement, my engine has been running perfectly, no more black smoke, rough idle, or performance problems. The vehicle emissions returned to normal levels and the check engine light hasnt come back on. Fuel consumption also improved noticeably. A properly functioning EGR valve is crucial for these engines since it manages exhaust gas recirculation effectively. Getting it fixed promptly helped prevent any catalytic converter damage, which would have been much more expensive to repair. The investment was definitely worth it considering how smoothly everything runs now. Just make sure you find a mechanic experienced with emission systems for the best results. Regular maintenance checks can help catch these issues before they cause bigger problems.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. I took my Subaru to a different mechanic last week who actually knew what they were doing with these engines. The check engine light and black smoke issues were exactly what you described, a faulty EGR valve. Total repair cost came to 380€ which included cleaning the valve, replacing gaskets and running full diagnostics. Pretty reasonable considering how much better the car runs now. The rough idle and jerking during acceleration completely disappeared after the fix. My vehicle emissions are back to normal levels and fuel economy has improved significantly. Even that annoying hissing sound during acceleration is gone. Really glad I got it sorted before any serious engine damage occurred. Great advice about finding mechanics who specialize in these engines, makes a huge difference compared to my previous terrible repair experience. Will definitely keep up with regular maintenance checks to prevent future EGR issues.
