Smart Fortwo Sunshade Stuck, Electronic Failure Fix

Having trouble with my 2017 Smart Fortwo Electric. The sunshade is completely stuck and wont move at all. The cars error system shows a warning related to the sun blind. Has anyone dealt with similar issues in their Smart? The car has 124670 KM on it and I am a bit nervous about taking it to the shop after a previous bad experience. Would like to know what to expect, repair costs, common fixes, and whether this is something that needs immediate attention. Any tips from those whove been through this?

I faced a similar sunshade repair issue with my 2020 Smart EQ ForFour. The sun blind motor completely failed, showing the same warning message. After inspection, the issue was traced to a faulty motor mechanism and worn wiring in the sunshade assembly. The repair required: Complete removal of headliner, Replacement of the entire sunshade motor unit, New wiring harness installation, Recalibration of the UV protection system This was a serious repair that took about 6 hours at the shop. The window visor mechanism is connected to several other electrical components, making it complex to fix. Driving with a malfunctioning sunshade could lead to water leaks and potential electrical issues if left unaddressed. Based on the symptoms described, it sounds identical to what happened to my car. The car blind system in Smart vehicles tends to have this issue around the 100000-150000 km mark. Would recommend getting it checked soon, as delaying could lead to more extensive damage to the surrounding components. The repair should be done at a shop familiar with Smart electrical systems, as the sun visor mechanism requires specific diagnostic tools and knowledge of the electrical architecture.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That does sound exactly like what I am dealing with. I was wondering how much you ended up paying for the complete sun blind repair and if youve had any other issues with the UV protection system since then? My local shop quoted me a really high price and I am trying to figure out if thats normal for this type of repair on a Smart.

Following my visit to the mechanic, the car interior sunshade problem has been completely resolved. The repair involved replacing the defective sun blind motor unit, which came to 330€ including labor. This was actually a fair price considering the complexity of accessing and fixing the UV protection system. Since the repair, the car sunshade has been working flawlessly, no sticking, strange noises, or warning messages. The mechanic mentioned they often see this issue in Smart models, so they knew exactly how to handle the repair. This interior accessory is now operating as smoothly as when the car was new. The entire fix took around 5 hours, which included testing the system thoroughly after installation. If your quote is significantly higher than 330€, you might want to get a second opinion from another Smart-certified shop.

Thanks for the detailed input. Finally took my Smart to a certified shop last week and got the sun blind fixed. The total came to 375€, which wasnt as bad as I initially feared. The mechanic showed me the old motor unit which was completely seized up. They had to remove quite a bit of the interior trim to access the UV protection system but got everything back together perfectly. The repair took about 4 hours and they even gave the entire sun visor assembly a good cleaning while they were in there. The car blind system is working perfectly now, smooth and quiet operation with no more warning messages on the dash. Really glad I didnt wait longer as they found some minor water spots starting to form near the wiring. Could have turned into a much bigger electrical problem if left unfixed. Definitely worth getting it done at a proper Smart shop despite my initial hesitation after that previous bad experience.
