Thanks, that's helpful. Where exactly should I be looking for the sensor wiring? Is it something easily visible or do I need to remove some trim?

On the Megane, the wiring loom went from the car body into the tailgate near the hinge. Repeated opening and closing eventually frayed the wires. The garage should be able to check the sensor wiring and plug connection. It's probably best to take it to them, as electrical faults can be tricky and you don't want to cause more damage.

The garage confirmed the tailgate hall sensor was faulty. They replaced the wiring and sensor, and now the tailgate opens perfectly. The job cost 95€, which is acceptable. Thanks for the assistance.

Sounds like a nuisance. I had a similar thing with my old Renault Megane. The open tailgate sensor was acting up. It turned out to be a dodgy connection in the wiring harness where it goes into the tailgate. Have you checked the sensor wiring and plug connection for corrosion or damage? Sometimes it's just a matter of cleaning them up or tightening the connection.
