Skoda Rapid engine trouble

My 2012 Skoda Rapid with a gasoline engine is giving me trouble. Mileage is at 130298 km. I'm experiencing reduced engine power, the check engine light is on, and there's smoke when accelerating. The engine also runs rough, fuel consumption is higher, jerks when accelerating and there is a loud hissing sound when accelerating. Could this be the EGR valve?

Sounds like a classic EGR valve issue. I had similar symptoms with my Rapid, like the rough idle and power loss. The hissing noise could be a vacuum leak related to it too. Have you checked for any error codes? A faulty EGR can also mess with your catalytic converter in the long run, so it's best to get it sorted.

Error code is pointing to the EGR valve. What exactly does the EGR valve do? And is it okay to keep driving it like this?

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve basically recirculates a portion of your exhaust gas back into the engine intake. This lowers combustion temperatures, reducing emissions. Driving with a bad EGR can cause further problems, like clogging up your intake manifold or damaging the catalytic converter. Plus, your fuel consumption will suffer, and you might fail an emissions test. I would suggest to go to the workshop before something else breaks.

Thanks for the help. It was indeed the EGR valve. Had it replaced, cost 355€. The car runs smoothly again.
