Was your Audi diesel as well? Did the mechanic mention anything about oil sludge being a possible factor? I've heard the VANOS system can be sensitive to that.

My Audi was petrol. No mention of oil sludge specifically, but the mechanic did say that any contamination could affect the sensor's performance. Considering the cost I would recommend you have the workshop do the repair.

Thanks, that's reassuring. The shop confirmed the inlet camshaft solenoid valve is faulty. Quoted about 250€, which sounds reasonable. Hopefully, that sorts it out.

I encountered a similar issue with my older Audi A4. The check engine light illuminated, and the fuel consumption noticeably increased. It turned out to be a faulty camshaft position sensor.
