Skoda Kodiaq Brake Light Failure

Okay, I'm officially stumped. My 2022 Skoda Kodiaq with a gasoline engine is throwing a fit. I'm getting a brake light failure warning on the infotainment system, and the error memory is showing a bad brake light switch. The mileage is sitting at 199314 km. I've checked the tail lights themselves, and they seem fine. Could this really be a faulty switch? It seems odd on a car this new. Any ideas before I start looking at switch replacement or the brake system?

Hmm, that's a weird one. I had something similar happen with my Skoda Octavia. I got a brake light warning and an error message on the dash. Have you checked if anything is obstructing the brake pedal? It sounds stupid, but sometimes a loose item can interfere with the pedal's full range of motion. It might be worth a quick look before you start tearing things apart.

Interesting thought. Obstruction... I hadn't considered that at all. How would that cause an electrical issue though? I'm assuming the brake light switch is activated by the pedal's movement, so wouldn't it just mean the brake lights are always on?

Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me. The slightest pressure on the brake pedal was enough to keep the switch partially engaged. This caused the error message and meant the brake lights were always on, or flickering. If there's no obstruction, then yeah, it probably is the switch. If you're not comfortable with electrics, I'd suggest getting it checked out by a workshop. A faulty brake light switch can be dangerous and is an electrical issue.

You were spot on! Turns out, I was being a complete idiot. I had a floor mat that had slid forward and was ever so slightly pressing on the brake pedal. Removed it, and the error is gone, brake lights are working perfectly. Infotainment system is happy again too. Cost me absolutely nothing, which is a bonus! Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!
