Rough Shifting SQ5 Transmission Stuck in Limp Mode

My SQ5 (2017, gas, 164024KM) started behaving strangely with the transmission. The gearbox shifts are rough and inconsistent. The control module seems to have put the car in limp mode, making it almost undriveable. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for advice before heading back to a shop since my last mechanic visit was less than stellar. Trying to understand if this is likely a major transmission issue or perhaps something simpler.

Having experienced similar symptoms on my S4 (2014, gas), the rough shifting combined with limp mode activation often points to more than just transmission issues. The powertrain malfunction in my case stemmed from a failing ABS sensor that caused a chain reaction. When the ABS sensor malfunctioned, it affected multiple systems including the transmission control module. The gear selector became erratic, and the torque converter started showing irregular behavior patterns. The repair required: Complete diagnostic scan of transmission control unit, Replacement of faulty ABS sensor, Reset and recalibration of affected control modules, Clearing multiple fault codes across different systems This turned out to be a serious issue because the ABS fault triggered the transfer case to behave erratically, causing the transmission to protect itself by entering limp mode. The transmission itself was actually fine, but the safety systems were reacting to incorrect sensor data. Before replacing major transmission components, having a complete diagnostic scan focusing on ABS and related sensors would be advisable, as these systems are highly interconnected in modern vehicles.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had very similar symptoms with my 2018 SQ5 last summer. Traction control light came on and diagnostic trouble codes pointed to transmission issues but it turned out to be relatively minor. The mechanic found a damaged wiring harness that was causing intermittent signal problems. The gear selector would sometimes get confused and put the car in limp mode. Did you get it fixed completely? Id be curious what the total repair cost was and if youve had any related issues since then?

Yes, I got everything fixed completely. After finding the faulty ABS sensor that was sending incorrect signals, the mechanic traced how this was affecting multiple systems. The transfer case limp mode active warning disappeared immediately after the repair and hasnt returned since. The final diagnosis showed several fault codes triggered by that single failing sensor. Once replaced and recalibrated, the gear selector returned to normal operation and the transmission control module stopped putting the car in limp mode. The best part was that my warranty covered all costs since these were consequential faults from the ABS system malfunction. Total repair cost was 0 Euro, though typically this type of diagnostic work and repair could run several hundred Euro without coverage. The torque converter and transmission were perfectly fine, it was just the safety systems reacting to bad sensor data. Since the repair, shifting has been smooth and Ive had zero related issues for over 8 months now.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to share how this story ended. After reading these responses, I took my SQ5 to a different mechanic who specializes in transmission diagnostics. What appeared to be a major transmission problem turned out to be a faulty control module sensor. The diagnostic trouble codes initially confused my first mechanic, but the specialist quickly identified the real issue. The powertrain malfunction that triggered limp mode was caused by a corroded connector sending wrong signals to the transmission control unit. The repair was straightforward: Full diagnostic scan, Cleaning and replacing the connector, Resetting the fault codes, Test drive to confirm proper function Total cost came to 450 Euro, much less than I feared. The transmission shifts perfectly now, and Ive put on about 2000km since the repair with zero issues. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of jumping into major transmission work.
