Renegade Hybrid Exhaust + Rough Running Issues Fix

My Renegade Hybrid started acting weird lately with rough engine running and a strong smell from the exhaust pipe. The engine light is on and I can hear some exhaust leaking somewhere. Last mechanic visit was not great, so looking for advice before going back. Could be something with the catalytic converter or EGR valve? Car specs: 2023 Jeep Renegade Hybrid at 145503km. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms and can recommend what to look out for or how much repairs typically cost?

Had similar issues with my 2020 Jeep Compass 4xe. The symptoms pointed to a faulty oxygen sensor, which was causing incorrect fuel mixture and affecting the catalytic converter performance. The exhaust pipe leak sound combined with the engine light typically indicates problems in the exhaust system. The rough running could be from the engine compensating for incorrect readings from the oxygen sensor. These symptoms can cascade into more serious issues if not addressed promptly. In my case, the diagnosis revealed both a deteriorated oxygen sensor and a small crack in the particulate filter. The repair involved replacing both components since they work together in the emissions system. This was a serious repair requiring specialized diagnostic equipment and several hours of labor. While checking these components, make sure your DEF fluid levels are correct, as low levels can trigger similar symptoms in hybrid systems. The mechanic should also scan for specific error codes related to the exhaust system, as these will point to the exact component causing the issue. Would strongly recommend getting this checked soon, as these issues can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and potential damage to other engine components if left unattended.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the oxygen sensor and particulate filter issues. Pretty similar to what I am experiencing with my Renegade. Curious to know how much you ended up paying for the complete repair? Also, have you noticed any other exhaust system problems since getting it fixed? Want to get an idea of what to expect cost-wise and if the fix was a permanent solution or if I should plan for follow-up repairs.

After taking my Compass to the mechanic last week, the exhaust treatment malfunction was completely resolved. The diagnosis confirmed a defective Lambda sensor, just as I suspected from the symptoms. The total repair cost came to 375 Euro, which included parts and labor. Since fixing the oxygen sensor, the engine runs smoothly with no more rough idling or exhaust smells. The check engine light cleared up immediately after the repair, and the exhaust system now functions perfectly. No additional exhaust system issues have emerged in the time since. The particulate filter was inspected during the repair and found to be in good condition, so no replacement was needed in my case. The mechanic also checked the EGR valve as a precaution, since these components often work together in the emissions system. The fix seems to be permanent, and I would not expect you to need any follow-up repairs if your issue is similar. Just make sure the shop performs a thorough diagnostic check to confirm the exact cause before starting repairs.

I finally took my Renegade to the mechanic yesterday after getting advice here. The diagnostic scan revealed a failing NOx sensor and a small crack in the exhaust manifold, causing the leak sound. This explained the rough running and strong exhaust smell perfectly. The total repair came to 580 Euro, which included replacing the sensor, patching the exhaust leak, and a full system diagnostic. They also checked the catalytic converter and EGR valve, but both were functioning properly. The engine light turned off right after the repair, and the car runs much smoother now. No more strange smells or weird noises from the exhaust system. Really glad I got it checked out before the problems got worse. The mechanic mentioned that catching these issues early prevented potential damage to the catalytic converter, which would have been a much more expensive fix. For anyone with similar symptoms, definitely worth getting it checked out sooner rather than later. The repair was straightforward and took about 3 hours total.
