Problems with the gearbox in the 2010 BMW 5 Series Diesel: causes and workshop experience

Hello everyone, I have recently started having a problem with my 2010 BMW 5 series diesel. The symptoms are jumping or out of round gear changes, a grinding noise when changing gear and a whistling or grinding noise. I have a hunch that it may have something to do with the transmission oil pressure cooler - malfunction perhaps? Have any of you had similar experiences? How did you sort it out in the workshop and what were your experiences? Thanks in advance for any tips and experiences!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2008 BMW 3 series diesel. On my side it was very grinding and not smooth when changing gears. I would describe myself as someone with little car knowledge, so I went straight to the garage. They found that the cable connection to the valve was faulty. The repair cost me 170 euros. However, to give you more details and be able to help you better, I would first need more information about your vehicle. Did you carry out any work on your car before this problem occurred? And is your car an automatic or manual transmission? Your transmission oil pressure cooler could well be the problem, but I need to know more to confirm this.

Hey, thanks for your quick advice! I actually changed the oil before the problem occurred. Other than that, no major work. And yes, my BMW is an automatic transmission. Regarding the mileage, it's at 187960 km, and the last service was not too long ago. Did I perhaps do something wrong when I changed the oil? Unlikely, isn't it? Any other ideas?

Hey, thanks for the additional info! It could be possible that something went wrong during the oil change, maybe even too little or the wrong transmission fluid was used. However, as you say, that's unlikely. Unless it was the first time you changed the oil yourself. Automatic transmissions can sometimes shift out of round due to a faulty electronic control unit. Depending on the troubleshooting, this could either be cheap or quite costly. Another thought is that your transmission oil pressure cooler may have a problem, as you suspected. This could lead to an overheated transmission, which in turn could lead to the noises and rough shifting you described. I would advise you to take the car to a garage for a diagnosis. It may help to change the gearbox oil and filter if it hasn't already been done. It would also be good to check the condition of the clutch and gearbox. Hopefully it's nothing serious! Please give us an update as soon as you know more. Good luck!

Hi, your tips sound really logical, thanks for the detailed ideas! I'll definitely have the gearbox oil and clutch checked. I've never changed the oil myself, so that should actually be correct. I'll keep you posted as soon as I hear from the garage. Let's hope for the best! Thanks again and have a good trip everyone!
