Problems with Mercedes GLS Class 2017: engine problems, high fuel consumption and possible defect in the mass air flow sensor

Hi guys, have you ever had problems with a Mercedes GLS Class (year 2017, petrol engine) that runs so strangely? When accelerating hard, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light comes on, the engine switches itself off and it has lost power. The engine runs erratically, the car jerks when accelerating, guzzles an unnecessary amount of fuel, stalls at idle and vibrates when idling. I strongly suspect that the mass air flow sensor could be defective. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me a tip on how you solved this in the workshop? Any help would really help me. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Mercedes GLA Class (2015). I wouldn't describe myself as a car mechanic, but I have had a few experiences. When I noticed this problem, I immediately drove to the garage. After a thorough check, it turned out that the damage to the wiring harness was to blame. It cost me 95 euros to fix the problem. To be able to help you more accurately, could you please give me more information about your car? Would like to know if it is making any unusual noises or if you noticed anything recently before the problem occurred? Hopefully I can help you further.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply. My GLS currently has 103382 km down and the last service was about 6 months ago. I haven't noticed any unusual noises, but just before the problem occurred I noticed increased fuel consumption. I will definitely take your experience into consideration and have the wiring harness checked. I hope that solves my problem. Thanks for your advice!

No problem! It definitely sounds like there could be a problem with your wiring harness as well. This additional information will help to some extent. Sometimes increased fuel consumption can also indicate a problem with the mass airflow sensor. But that doesn't mean it's definitely your problem. I would recommend that you have your car checked at a garage. They can use their special tools to determine what exactly is going wrong. It could well be that several components have given up the ghost at the same time. I hope that it can be fixed as easily and cheaply for you as it was for my GLA. Be sure to give us an update here when you know more. Good luck with that!

Hey, thanks a lot! You're right, it really would be better to take the car to a garage and have it checked thoroughly. I really hope it's as easy and inexpensive to fix as it was for you. I will definitely give an update as soon as I have more information. Thanks again for your help!
