Problems with high fuel consumption, strong exhaust odor and uneven engine running in BMW 5 Series

Hello, I have a problem with my BMW 5 Series, year of manufacture 2016, gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, the engine performance is poor, the fuel consumption is high, I can smell a strong exhaust odor and the car shakes when idling. Could this be related to the engine running rough? Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me tips on troubleshooting or their experiences with the garage? Would be super grateful for your help!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2014 BMW 3 Series. I would rate my experience with cars as pretty low. I had to take the car to the garage, they then identified misfiring due to faulty ignition coils or worn spark plugs as the cause and repaired it. That cost me 145 euros. Can you tell us a bit more about your car? There are many different versions of the BMW 5 Series with different engines. The more information you provide, the more specifically we can help you here!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply! My little darling now has 52416 kilometers on the clock and the last service was about a year ago. I hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for the additional information! In your case, I would actually recommend checking the ignition coils or spark plugs. Given your mileage and the age of the car, this could really be the culprit. I've already done that with my 3 Series, and after replacing them everything was fine again. And if the problem still persists after that, I would take the car to the workshop. Maybe you can call your BMW dealer and ask how much it would cost to replace the ignition coils. Hope that helps you! I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing worse!

Thank you very much, that really helps a lot. I'll call the dealer tomorrow and ask about the costs. Hopefully it won't be too expensive. Have a nice evening and thanks again for the tips!

I get help hopefully now because I my bmw E91 325i 2008 Touring is going to a bmw specialist. I bought the car by dealer with garanty and full service. But after one day I had engine problems: multiple misfire, dme stratisfite running, bad electric and more. Because of holiday they say bring car to another garage for repairs. I did: new injectors, new ignition coils and spark plugs costs: 3450 euro. CAR drove better but stile problem with electric and smooth idle. But garage said don’t worry thats normal enjoy the car. We paid and gave invoice to dealer who promised to pay for it. But they didn’t because we went to other garage and therms of garant explain that in this case all garanty will expire by visit a other garage and all costs are for car owner. One week later car stopt again. This time white smoke, engine light on, engine run ruff and stalled and so on. Diagnose of brokedown problem, vanos in and out, co2 sensor, ibs sensor and more and more . So i hire a lawyer and called BMW specialist for check issues and repair if possible and keep u informed if i survive hart attack because of the invoice costs hahaha

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. It sounds like you've had a lot of work done already, but the problems persist. The white smoke and rough running could be due to a variety of issues, including a blown head gasket or a problem with the turbocharger, if your car has one. Given the complexity of the situation, I would recommend having the car thoroughly inspected by a BMW specialist, as you're planning to do. Please keep us updated on the progress and don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

Thanks! Yes blown gasket is also a possiblity. But 15-11 car is checked by the specialist and shall share his oppinion of the problem. All reed engine problems here can be caused by so many factors and best way to check is by using Carly and check one by one the posibillities and wright down what u did and how u did (this could help a mechanic)

Hello, It’s been a while since posting here. Today was the day that I got my car fixed and back. This was unfortunately not an quick repairs. There were multiple issues and a lot of hours of diagnostics. The following repairs are made: vanos valves and sensors, 6 injectors, cartergasket, injection valve, krankcasevalve, vacuum hoses, frm module, 6 coils, 6 plugs, 5 hours testing and diagnostics for finetuning problems plus all liquids changed because of faulty used liquids and all filters. The seller used cheap and bushfixes for selling the car and hoping that the car made far enough so they have no blame. To bad that these companies exist. Total invoice 7850 euro
