Problems with Ford S Max 2022: check engine light, loss of power and strong exhaust odor

Hi guys, I'm having problems with my Ford S Max petrol engine, year of manufacture 2022. The check engine light comes on, the engine switches off by itself, seems to lose power, runs unevenly and jerks when accelerating. The exhaust fumes also smell pretty bad. I suspect that this could be due to misfiring, but I'm not sure. Have any of you had similar experiences and can give me a tip on how to fix the problem? How did you get it solved in the workshop? I would appreciate any help.

Hi, I also have a Ford model, namely a 2020 Ford Galaxy. I'm not a car mechanic, but I've done a few minor repairs myself, so I'd say I have a bit of experience. I had a similar problem with my car and unfortunately the engine control unit was faulty. The repair cost me 1000 euros. The visit to the workshop was quite straightforward, they quickly identified the problem and fixed it. As there can be many causes for your problem, it would be good to know if you have noticed any other symptoms? Does your car have a high mileage? Have any repairs been carried out on the engine? It could be that your problem is also a faulty engine control unit, but without more details or a diagnosis from a workshop, I can't tell you exactly. I recommend you take your car to a garage for an accurate diagnosis. Hope this helps you a little. All the best!

Hi, thanks for your quick reply! I don't have an exact diagnosis, but the car already has 124878 km on the clock and the last inspection was just recently. No engine repairs so far. I'll take your advice to heart and have the engine control unit checked. A thousand tocks and hopefully it won't be too expensive...

Hey, no problem, always happy to help. With the mileage on your S Max, it can happen that parts wear out and have to be replaced. In my Galaxy, it was the engine control unit, but it's really difficult to say whether this is the case with your car without a proper workshop diagnosis. Unfortunately, I can't tell you the exact cost, but if it really is the engine control unit, it could be in the same price range as mine. It also depends on where you have it repaired. It could be more expensive at an authorized workshop. Maybe you can find a good independent garage that will do it cheaper. In any case, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it won't be too expensive and that you'll get your car back on the road quickly. Keep us posted on how things progress. All the best!
