Problems with BMW 2 Series Diesel 2013: Engine control light, shutdown, loss of power and starting difficulties

Good afternoon, everyone! I am struggling with my 2013 2 series BMW diesel. There are a few symptoms that are causing me concern: The check engine light is on, the engine stalls by itself, the cold start time is longer, there is a loss of power, the engine runs rough, and sometimes the car won't start at all. I have a feeling in my stomach that it might be the crankshaft sensor. Does anyone have experience with such a problem and can give me some advice? What experience have you had of your garage fixing this problem? Thanks for your help!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2011 BMW 3 series diesel. I don't have much experience yet, but the check engine light came on, the engine ran rough and there was also a loss of power. Very similar to what you describe. I then went to the garage. The staff there explained to me that my degree of shrinkage/encoder wheel was defective. That was probably the cause of the problem. So they replaced the part and that solved the problem. Unfortunately, I had to pay 1370 euros for the repair. Perhaps you could have this checked on your car. Can you tell me a bit more about your vehicle? Then I might be able to help you in more detail. I hope this helps you!

First of all, thanks for the answer. As I said, my car is a 2013 BMW 2 series diesel with 107400km on the clock. Could the flywheel/encoder wheel also be the case for me? Your experience sounds very similar to my problem, even if it is expensive, the main thing is that the car runs smoothly again. If anyone else has any experience or tips, please let me know! At the moment, any advice is really worth its weight in gold. Thank you in advance!

Hi there, I also had the same issue with my 2014 BMW 3 series diesel. My symptoms were almost identical, the check engine light was on, the engine was running rough and the car didn't have full power. At one point it even stalled while driving. In the end, I towed the car to my mechanic and after two days he told me that it was actually the crankshaft sensor. The sensor was probably defective, which meant that the control unit wasn't getting the right information, which led to all the problems. The cost of such a repair can of course vary, but I paid around 400 euros, including diagnosis and labor. This fixed the problem and my car has been running like clockwork ever since. So the symptoms and suspicions match my experience. Maybe it's similar for you. Have it checked, it could really be the crankshaft sensor. I hope I was able to help you a little. Stay tuned!

Hey, thanks for the detailed answer. That sounds pretty much like what my car is doing at the moment. I'll probably go to the garage as soon as possible and have a closer look. I hope that it's just the crankshaft sensor and that the repair won't cost me more than 400 euros. That would at least be a relatively cheap solution. I'm glad I asked here and am very grateful for the kind tips. I will keep you posted on the diagnosis and repair. Thanks again and have a nice day!

Servus, Yes, it sounds as if the crankshaft sensor is defective. If the engine control unit has no signal from the crankshaft sensor, the engine control unit naturally does not know where the crankshaft is. Normally, the camshaft sensor is then used as a reference value/replacement value, but the engine does not run completely smoothly. If the sensor is defective, please only use an original spare part to avoid problems.
