Problem with Toyota Auris 2012: Black smoke, loss of power and engine judder - Defective ignition coil?

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Toyota Auris, model year 2012, gasoline engine. When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the check engine light comes on and the engine no longer seems to have full power, runs rough and jerks. Sometimes it won't start, consumes more fuel than usual, dies at idle and vibrates heavily. I suspect that the ignition coil could be defective or that there are misfires. Do any of you have experience with such symptoms? How did you get the problem solved in the workshop and what were your experiences? All tips and experiences are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2010 Toyota Corolla, I have some experience with cars and after some investigation, it came out that the engine control unit was faulty. It was not an easy diagnosis, I had to go to the garage several times. The whole thing cost me 1000 euros. Have you already run a diagnostic test? Are there any error codes? This information could help to understand your problem better and help you better. Please share more details about your car, such as mileage, service history, etc., to better isolate the problem.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I haven't done a diagnostic test yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list. My Auris now has 181065 km on the clock. The last service was about a month ago. There were no major anomalies, apart from the usual wear parts. That's interesting about the engine control unit, I'll keep that in mind. I was really hoping I could avoid the cost of an expensive repair. But it doesn't look like that's the case...

No problem, that's what we're here for. With your mileage, there could already be some signs of wear. Since the engine control unit was defective in my case, you could be facing a costly repair. But have it checked first. It could also be something else, such as the mass air flow sensor, the ignition coil or the injection system. Only a diagnostic run will provide more precise information. My tip: Go to a good garage and have a detailed diagnostic test carried out. This may cost a bit of money, but in the end it's cheaper than replacing parts on suspicion and ending up in the workshop after all. Stay tuned and let us know what comes out of the diagnosis. Hope you get the problem under control soon. All the best!

Hey, thanks for your advice. So the mass airflow sensor and the fuel injection system might actually be possibilities I should consider. The detailed diagnostic test is probably the best thing I can do, even if the cost is a bit higher to get more accurate information. I'll follow your tip and then share the results here as soon as possible. Thanks again, and of course I hope to get the problem solved soon. See you then!
