Thanks for sharing that detailed repair story. My Phaeton had almost identical electrical problems last winter. After reading your post, Im curious, how much did you end up paying for the complete alternator replacement and related work? Also, have you noticed any other alternator issues or battery low warnings since the repair was done? In my case, the voltage drop symptoms came back after 6 months, but it turned out to be just a loose ground connection rather than another alternator issue. Would be good to know if you experienced anything similar.

After getting the generator replaced by a certified shop, my Touareg has been running perfectly with no electrical issues. The complete repair, including parts and labor, came to 960€ which was worth every cent considering the car hasnt shown any voltage drop or starting problems since. The alternator issue was definitely the root cause, no more dim headlights or car wont start situations like before. The shop did a thorough job testing all connections after the replacement, which probably helped prevent the loose ground problem you experienced. Its been over a year now, and the charging system works flawlessly. The battery maintains proper voltage even with heavy electrical loads. For anyone facing similar symptoms, getting the alternator checked early can prevent more expensive repairs down the line. Like your case shows, its always smart to check the simple things like ground connections first, but a failing generator will eventually need replacement to resolve persistent electrical system problems.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I finally got my Phaeton fixed last week after finding a specialized VW shop through a. The starter motor was struggling due to a failing alternator, just as suggested here. The repair cost came to 890€ total: New alternator unit, Labor for replacement, Full system diagnostic check, Battery load test The shop found the voltage drop was indeed from the bad alternator. They also cleaned all ground connections while the car was in. The headlights are bright again, engine power is back to normal, and no more warning lights on the dash. Much better experience than my previous mechanic who kept suggesting expensive fixes without properly diagnosing the charging system first. Car starts perfectly now, even in cold weather. Should have gotten that second opinion sooner instead of waiting.

Had similar issues with my 2007 VW Touareg V6 TDI. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, dim headlights, starting problems, and reduced power indicating a serious voltage drop across the electrical system. The warning light typically indicates charging system problems. In my case, the alternator (generator) was failing, causing battery drain even during normal driving. The serpentine belt was still good, but the alternator bearings had worn out, leading to inconsistent charging. This is a serious repair that requires professional diagnosis and replacement. The car electronics are interconnected, and running with a faulty charging system can damage other components. When the battery runs low, it affects everything from engine management to comfort features. The repair involved: Complete alternator replacement, Battery load testing, Checking all main ground connections, Testing the entire charging circuit The job took a full day at the shop. Given your models sophisticated electronics, I recommend getting it checked soon. This isnt something that will fix itself, and continuing to drive with charging system issues can lead to getting stranded. A second opinion is always worth it for major repairs like this. Look for a shop specializing in VW electrical systems, as these cars have specific diagnostic requirements.
