Thanks for sharing your experience with the Canyon. My Sonoma had the exact same symptoms, the loud noise and check engine light really had me worried. The flap motor on my exhaust system was indeed the problem, just as you described. Did you remember what the total repair cost was for fixing your exhaust flaps? Also wondering if youve had any other exhaust-related problems since the repair? My mechanic mentioned something about checking the entire system while they are at it, so Im trying to budget accordingly.

Great to hear back about your Sonoma. Since my last reply, I got the exhaust flap issue fixed on my Canyon and the total repair cost came to 190 Euro for the complete fix, including the flap motor replacement. The exhaust valves are now working perfectly and the annoying noise completely disappeared. The repair resolved all the exhaust-related problems and engine performance returned to normal. Having the whole exhaust system checked while fixing the flaps was definitely worth it, no issues have cropped up in the months since the repair. Your mechanic makes a good point about inspecting the complete system. A thorough check can prevent future problems and ensure the new exhaust flap components work properly with the rest of the exhaust setup. The initial diagnosis of the flap motor failure was spot on in my case, and the fix has proven reliable.

I took my Sonoma to a trusted mechanic last week and got everything sorted out. The exhaust flap motor was indeed the culprit, just as suspected. Total repair cost came to 230 Euro, which included a full exhaust system inspection. The mechanic found minor corrosion near the flap assembly but caught it early enough to prevent further damage. The exhaust noise is completely gone now and the check engine light cleared up right after the repair. Engine performance has noticeably improved too. While they had it up on the lift, they did a complete check of the entire exhaust system, definitely worth the extra time since they caught a loose bracket that could have caused problems later. The whole repair took about 4 hours, but the results are fantastic. No more startling noise during cold starts and everything runs smoothly now. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped confirm my suspicions about the flap motor issue before taking it in for repairs.

When my 2016 GMC Canyon developed similar symptoms, the exhaust flap actuator had completely failed. The noise during cold starts was a clear indicator of exhaust components not functioning properly. The flap actuator is an electrical component that controls exhaust flow and engine performance. When it fails, the system defaults to an open position, causing excessive noise and triggering the check engine light. The repair required replacing both the actuator and its control module as they often fail together. This turned out to be a serious issue requiring immediate attention, as continued operation could lead to reduced engine performance and potential damage to other exhaust system parts. The repair took about 3 hours at the shop. They also discovered some corrosion around the flap mechanism, which is common in these models. For a proper diagnosis, get the check engine code read first. If its truly the exhaust flap, postponing the repair isnt recommended as it affects both performance and emissions control. A qualified mechanic should inspect the entire exhaust system, including surrounding components, as these issues rarely occur in isolation. Based on the symptoms described, it sounds nearly identical to what happened with my Canyon. Consider having it checked by a specialist in exhaust repair rather than a general mechanic.
