Nitro VANOS Solenoid Issues Spike Fuel Consumption

My 2009 Nitro started showing signs of trouble lately. The check engine light keeps coming on and fuel economy has gotten significantly worse. Based on some research, I suspect the variable timing system might be acting up, specifically the inlet VANOS solenoid. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and gotten them fixed? Looking for some real-world experience with repair costs and how the workshop diagnosed and fixed the issue. Currently burning through about 20% more fuel than usual. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar issue with my 2007 BMW 328i last year. With some experience working on variable valve timing systems, I recognized the symptoms you described right away as potential VANOS problems. The symptoms in my case were nearly identical, increased fuel consumption, check engine light, and I also noticed slightly lower power output at higher RPMs. The workshop diagnosed a faulty VANOS solenoid on the intake side. Total repair cost including diagnosis was 250€. The VANOS failure can often be related to either the solenoid itself or electrical supply issues. In my case, they replaced the intake VANOS solenoid and cleared the fault codes. Fuel economy returned to normal immediately after the repair. Before suggesting specific solutions for your case, could you share: Any error codes you might have pulled? Are you experiencing any power loss, especially at higher RPMs? Does the engine sound rougher than usual at idle? How many miles/kilometers are on your engine? These details would help determine if your symptoms align with what I experienced with the VANOS system issues.

Thanks for the feedback. At 139041 KM and with my most recent service being just two months ago, I did pull some codes. Getting P0011 and P0021, which point to timing issues. The engine does sound a bit rough at idle, especially when cold. After reading up more, I think the inlet camshaft and VANOS solenoid definitely need checking. The timing chain also makes a slight rattling sound on cold starts, which might be related to the variable timing system not functioning properly. Wondering if anyone has experience with these specific error codes and what the repair cost might end up being. The VANOS failure symptoms seem to match exactly what others have described. Going to book it in with a workshop that specializes in these systems next week.

Based on those error codes and symptoms, you are definitely dealing with VANOS failure. My BMW showed the exact same codes before repair, and that rattling sound during cold starts is a classic indicator of VANOS issues. In my case, what started as just the inlet VANOS solenoid problem eventually revealed some oil sludge buildup in the VANOS unit itself. The specialist workshop had to do a more thorough cleaning of the entire VANOS system, which pushed the total repair cost to around 600€. The low power symptoms and rough idle got noticeably worse over time until I had it fixed. The check engine light started coming on intermittently at first, then stayed on permanently. Worth noting that continued driving with faulty VANOS can lead to increased wear on other engine components. Given your mileage is similar to what mine was when the issue occurred (I was at about 145000 KM), I would strongly recommend getting it checked soon. The timing chain noise you mentioned could indicate the VANOS issue is already affecting other components. The BMW VANOS system is generally reliable but does require proper maintenance. Make sure the workshop also checks the oil condition, as contaminated oil can accelerate VANOS wear.

Thanks for the detailed responses. After hearing about these similar experiences, I feel more confident about the diagnosis. The matching error codes P0011 and P0021, plus the timing chain noise and rough idle really seem to confirm the VANOS solenoid issues you all mentioned. Called a specialist workshop today and booked it in for next Tuesday. They quoted around 700€ for a complete check of the inlet camshaft, VANOS solenoid replacement, and timing chain inspection. They mentioned they will also check for any oil sludge buildup in the VANOS unit since that seems to be a common related issue. The engine misfire at idle is getting more noticeable, especially during cold starts, so getting this fixed sooner rather than later seems like the smart move. Will update the thread once I get the final diagnosis and repair completed. Really appreciate all the insights shared here, helped me understand exactly what I am dealing with.
