MiTo Engine Stalls: Ignition Coil Diagnosis & Fix Guide

My car suddenly runs rough and jerks during acceleration. The engine stalls at idle and check engine light is on. I suspect a faulty ignition coil might be the cause. Has anyone experienced similar coil failure symptoms? Running a 2010 MiTo with gasoline engine at 95143 km. After a bad experience with my last mechanic, I am looking for advice on proper vehicle diagnostics and how to handle the repair. What should I expect in terms of repair cost and time if its really the coil pack?

Had the exact same symptoms on a 2013 Giulietta with the 1.4L turbo engine. Vehicle diagnostics confirmed a coil pack failure on cylinder 2. The check engine light came on during highway driving, followed by rough idle and jerking during acceleration. The repair itself is straightforward if its just the coil pack. A competent mechanic can identify the faulty coil through proper diagnostics and replace it in about an hour. Sometimes spark plugs need replacement at the same time since worn plugs can contribute to coil failure. Important to note that leaving this unrepaired can damage the catalytic converter due to unburned fuel. In my case, catching it early prevented any secondary issues. The coil pack is a common wear item on these engines, typically needing replacement between 60000-100000 km. For proper diagnosis, make sure they: Scan for specific misfire codes, Test coil resistance values, Verify spark plug condition, Check for damaged wiring Best to address this quickly to prevent further engine damage. The symptoms you describe match classic coil failure indicators.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the ignition system issues. I had similar misfire problems with my MiTo last summer, rough running, stalling, the whole deal. The mechanic confirmed coil failure through diagnostics and replaced both the faulty coil and spark plugs. The ignition coil repair went smoothly, but I am curious how much you ended up paying? In my case it was fairly reasonable but prices seem to vary quite a bit. Also, has everything been running properly since the fix or did you notice any other issues pop up?

Just had my MiTo checked by the mechanic last week. The faulty ignition coil was causing the misfire issues but turned out the main problem was just a loose connection. Total repair cost was 95 Euro to fix the cable and properly secure the coil pack connection. Much cheaper than replacing the entire ignition coil unit. Running perfectly smooth now with no check engine light or rough idle since the repair. Often these ignition system problems can be traced to simple connection issues rather than complete coil failure. The key is getting proper diagnostics done to pinpoint the exact cause of the misfire symptoms. When the mechanic tested the coil resistance values everything checked out fine, it was purely a connection problem in my case. Would definitely recommend having a professional run full diagnostics rather than just assuming the coil needs replacement.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! Just wanted to share how my repair experience turned out. Took it to a new mechanic who specializes in engine diagnostics. The vehicle scan showed multiple misfires and a failing coil pack, exactly as suspected. Total repair came to 285 Euro including new spark plugs since they were due for replacement anyway. Labor took about 90 minutes as they had to clean some corrosion around the connectors too. The engine hesitation and rough running completely disappeared after the fix. Really glad I got it sorted quickly before it could cause more problems. The new mechanic did a thorough job explaining everything and showing me the worn components. Car runs like new now, no more stalling or jerking during acceleration. Definitely worth getting proper diagnostics done rather than just guessing at the problem.
