Mini Roadster Overheating

My 2012 Mini Roadster is overheating. Also, it takes noticeably longer to reach operating temperature. A defective map thermostat seems likely, but I wanted to get a second opinion.

Good heavens, that sounds rather familiar! My Roadster exhibited precisely the same lamentable symptoms not so long ago. Pray tell, has the engine been taking an inordinate amount of time to reach its optimal operating temperature? Any untoward fluctuations in the temperature gauge readings? I would also inquire whether you have detected any discernible coolant leakage in the vicinity of the water pump or thermostat housing. A thorough inspection might prove most enlightening.

Yes, the engine definitely takes longer to warm up. I haven't spotted any coolant leaks. You mentioned your Roadster had the same issue was it indeed the thermostat? And did you replace the water pump at the same time?

Indeed, the defective thermostat was the principal culprit in my case. Initially, I contemplated replacing the water pump concurrently, as a preventative measure of sorts. However, upon closer scrutiny, the pump appeared to be in perfectly sound condition. Consequently, I elected to defer its replacement. In your particular situation, a judicious assessment of the water pump's condition would be most prudent. If you are not able to perform this evaluation yourself, I suggest you go to the workshop.

Just got the Roadster back. You were spot on. Defective map thermostat. Total cost was 360€, a bit more than expected, but sorted now. Thanks for your help!
